Last weekend, more than 77,000 natural products professionals and press came out to the 2016 Natural Products Expo West/Engredea at the Anaheim Convention Center. “Expo West,” which is the world’s largest tradeshow for the natural, organic and healthy products industry, took place March 9-13th. This year’s event was claimed to be the largest yet in its 36 year history.
The natural products industry is experiencing growth of 9% per year, driven in part by new and emerging brands and indicating that consumers are ready for cleaner health and beauty. Trending now are clean, natural products that also are also driven by science like Scotch Naturals for nails, which uses a patent pending technology to create nature-based nail lacquer that is salon quality.
You’ll also see natural alternatives to synthetic ingredients. Skincare line Dairyface is one brand with products that are dairy-based (and probiotic), meant to live in your fridge, and even have an expiration date. Many hair care products have ditched SLS, parabens and petrochemicals, but Holocuren’s Miracle Anti-Aging Hair Care not only does that, but also has natural and organic ingredients for hair growth. Premium ingredients include non-GMO hydrolyzed corn protein to boost hair regeneration, organic cranberry seed juice to enhance natural hair color, Kukui Nut Oil for hair strength, shine and elasticity, eucalyptus oil to stimulate blood flow and increase hair growth and bee propolis extract for hair growth and treating damaged hair. See all ingredients here.
Even products like personal lubricant are getting on board with the natural trends. Bio-Match Restore is an organic, moisturizing personal lubricant that mimics the body’s natural lubricating response. It’s made without petrochemicals, parabens or synthetic glycerin. Instead, they’re made with ingredients like organic aloe leaf juice, agar agar and GMO-free lactic acid, and are vegan and gluten free.
For food, consumers will see more whole, less processed foods. The official Natural Products Expo West “Best of West: Press Award” went to Suja Organic Crushed Raspberry Probiotic Water. Runners-up include Vega Sport Performance Protein Chocolate and Justin’s Maple Almond Butter with Pretzels Pack. The winner of the NEXT Accelerator Natural Products Business School Pitch Slam was Veggie Fries.
Expo West leaders reported that more mainstream companies are getting on board with healthier versions (Campbells and Kraft to name a few). Hopefully more restaurants will follow Panera Bread’s example. The restaurant committed to drop 150 artificial ingredients from its menus and uses chicken without antibiotics.
