It’s getting down to the wire and the big C–Christmas is almost here! And yikes, you’re still short some Christmas presents! How about you whip up inexpensive homemade Christmas presents? Or better still put those home on Christmas vacation children to work? These homemade crafts are simple enough for children to create, mostly unsupervised. Here are easy cheap holiday crafts and gifts kids can make.
Homemade specialty coffee Christmas presents. You’ll need: instant coffee, flavored vanilla or hazelnut powdered creamer, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Blend coffee, creamer and spices to taste (make some up to sample). For non-coffee drinkers, flavor instant cocoa for gifts kids can make. Flavor sweetened lemon instant iced tea with ginger. Fill decorated plastic holiday bags (20 for a dollar at Dollar Tree), wrap festive Christmas ribbon around cinnamon stick or candy cane and around bag. Tie to close. Write instructions on a little card. Place in a cheap Christmas mug from Dollar Tree, Walmart, Target or Family Dollar. For less than a $.50 each, you have almost two dozen holiday crafts and gifts kids can make.
Decorated photo album Christmas presents. For super-simple preschool holiday crafts, pick up cheap $.88 photo albums from Walmart. Have kids decorate with stickers, colored markers, glue-on fake gems or pictures cut from recycled wrapping paper. Fill with family photos. On the same theme, decorate photo frames. Make dot flowers, using cotton swabs to paint four dots of one color in flower pattern. Fill center with contrasting dot. Or glue buttons to side of picture frame. Personalize with name and date if you include the child’s photo.
Homemade washcloth pillow Christmas presents. “Sew” two washcloths together using yarn and yarn needle. Cut yarn pieces 8 inches long. Sew each individual piece through both washcloths to make a loop. Feed both ends back through loop and pull tight. Repeat till edges are mostly closed. Put fabric scraps in a zippered plastic bag for stuffing. Push into washcloth covering. Finish tying off. To wash cover, untie a few stitches and remove bag. For easy cheap gifts kids can make, use plain washcloths and have children decorate with handprints in fabric paint. Handmade holiday crafts. Buy inexpensive multipacks of Christmas ornaments and have kids personalize with names. Or have kids decorate plain glass Christmas ornaments with glue, markers, craft paint, faux gems and glitter glue. Make stuffed snowman or gingerbread man Christmas ornaments by cutting two pieces of scrap felt or fabric and stuffing as you did the washcloth pillows. Decorate Christmas ornaments with beads and sequins to make body. Cut piece of scrap craft foam into picture frames. Decorate picture frame ornaments and tape child’s picture to back. Add a loop of gift wrapping ribbon for homemade Christmas ornaments.
