During the merry month of May (2016) Hollywood, California will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Farmers Market where local growers bring their fresh produce to the city. It all began when former City Council Member Michael Woo – representing Council District 13 (Hollywood) – suggested establishing a Farmer’s Market as a means of improving the quality of neighborhood life for residents and business owners alike. Through the support of Woo and the City, as well as the local Community Redevelopment Agency, the Hollywood Farmers’ Market launched on a sunny Sunday in May, 1991 and proved to be an immediate hit. Today hundreds of people flock to the outdoor market to pick up fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, crafts and fast food.
On May 1, 2016 SEE-LA will kick off the month-long fete with a special event at the market from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Cahuenga and Ivar, that will feature local performers and an official ceremony attended by city officials, celebrity chefs (Susan Feniger and Suzanne Tracht) and original farmers. There will be a Chef Stage set up for book signings by well-known authors and cookbook writers. The celebrations continue each Sunday in May (May 8, May 15, May 22, and May 29) with more celebrity chefs such as Curtis Stone and Neal Fraser preparing dishes for guests and authors making appearances and signing copies of their books
We are so excited to be celebrating a quarter century in Hollywood,” said James Haydu, Executive Director, SEE-LA. “What began as a dream has become one of the oldest and best-loved institutions in Los Angeles, and we’re thrilled to be paying homage to all those who helped make it a success…from the city leaders to the farmers who have been with us for all these years. It’s a truly special community and we can’t wait to fête everyone involved.”
“The Hollywood Farmers’ Market has evolved right alongside Hollywood itself to become something magnificent and cherished, just as we hoped it would when we brought it to life in 1991,” said Woo. “Over the years the Market has expanded to become a community meeting place, hosting more than 160 farmers, producers and food artisans who specialize in every crop that’s grown seasonally around the state and a large variety of culinary perspectives and practices from around the globe. Everyone from local families who live in the neighborhood to some of Southern California’s most respected chefs use the Market as their weekly food source and walk-in pantry. This makes us immensely proud and we’re excited to share our pride with the community at large.”
If you enjoy outdoor shopping for farm to table produce, you just might like to attend one of these events, or visit the market any Sunday to stock your larder.
