TV, Broadway, comedy-club headliner and self-proclaimed geek, Tom Lenk, will star in the Jonathan Tolins’ award-winning comedy Buyer & Cellar at Hartford’s TheaterWorks January 8 through February.14, 2016.
Playwright Jonathan Tolins’ works include The Twilight of the Golds (Broadway, Booth Theatre), If Memory Serves (Promenade), The Last Sunday in June (Rattlestick, Century Center), and Secrets of the Trade (Primary Stages). For television, he was a writer for the hit series Queer as Folk, the Academy Awards, the Tony Awards, and Partners.
Lenk, best known for his role as Andrew Wells in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel, will star as Alex, ‘an underemployed actor in Los Angeles who goes to work in Barbra Streisand’s Malibu basement store.’ He dusts the dolls, mans the frozen yogurt machine, and satisfies the shopping whims of the one and only cellar customer – Ms. Streisand herself. As Alex and Barbra develop an odd relationship, Alex’s life gets turned upside down.
The New York Times called Buyer & Seller “One of the 10 Best Bets on Broadway” and it received equal raves from most critics. The show was a smash hit in Manhattan and throughout its national tour.
Lenk’s other TV roles have included Witches of East End, Episodes, Six Feet Under, Nip/Tuck and How I Met Your Mother. At the time of this writing, we can find no evidence of his appearance in any of the Law and Order franchises.
His film credits include the horror comedy The Cabin in the Woods, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, Argo, Transformers and Josh Welhan’s film Much Ado About Nothing.
On stage he starred in both the Broadway and original Los Angeles casts of Rock of Ages and in the West Coast premiere of Book of Liz. He regularly performs live comedy in Los Angeles and on tour in the USA, Canada and the UK with his solo comedy show, Nerdgasm. Tom Lenk has a degree in Theater Arts from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television where he received the Carol Burnett Award and Scholarship. (Be sure to see him in this show – he’ll be so glad you had this time together.)
TheaterWorks’s Producing Artistic Director, Rob Ruggiero told the press, “I’m so excited to present Buyer & Cellar. This show is storytelling at its best – it’s inventive and funny, charming and whimsical. And Tom is terrific. I’m a fan and Hartford audiences will love him too. The play is warm and witty and the perfect way to spend a cold winter evening.”
For anyone who needs two holiday theater fixes, here’s a jolly connection to Buyer & Cellar: the third edition of the hilarious Christmas On The Rocks is now running through Dec. 23 at Theaterworks. This is a comedy parody with your favorite young holiday movie and TV characters -all grown up. This current show is written by seven talented playwrights, including Buyer & Cellar‘s Jonathan Tolins, and directed by the award-winning Rob Ruggiero.
How’s that for doubling the joy of the festive season?
