Toby, an 11-year-old tri-color German shepherd thought he was going for a ride on Christmas Eve. With his tail wagging thinking he was on a fun adventure, his owner invited him into the car, but instead of the park, the destination was the East Valley Shelter. “To watch this senior dog being led into the East Valley shelter, tail wagging, and to know he was getting dumped, shook me and an employee to the core,” stated a shelter volunteer who sadly described her own emotional pain after recently euthanizing her 17-year-old terminally ill dog and freeing him from pain.
How some people are capable of turning their backs on their loyal companions defies the logic of animal advocates. In Toby’s tragic case, the dog has a tumor on his back end, and the owner told the staff, he feared the dog would die on Christmas Day. Staff members suggested the owner take Toby to a veterinarian, and if it was determined Toby needed to be euthanized, the dog’s family could be there to comfort him in his last moments. “He was informed that there might be financial assistance, if he would please wait a couple of days and take him to an outside vet. He refused.” And then came the ultimate betrayal for Toby – everyone sitting in the lobby of the shelter watched as the dog’s “human” patted Toby on the head, paid the surrender fee and walked away forever. “I’m sure he saw the tears in my eyes,” the volunteer wrote on her Facebook page.
