Hillary Clinton’s ties to the very unpopular Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel plague her candidacy from the air today with banners flying overhead reminding voters what kind of politics they will conjure up with a vote for Hillary Clinton. It looks as though the activists are hoping to send a message similar to that old adage of “if you lay down with dogs you will get up with fleas.” An activist group is bombarding the voters in Illinois with reminders of Emanuel being a former senior aide to President Bill Clinton on March 15, as voters make their way into the primary voting booths.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Tess Raser, who is one of the organizers behind these high-flying anti-Hillary banners, said: “Tell me who you know and I’ll tell you who you are.” Basically they are hoping voters will agree that you are known by the company you keep. The banners, which are not hard to miss, read “Chicago Stands with Laquan, Hillary Stands with Rahm #ByeA nita.”
Rahm Emanuel, who also served as President Obama’s chief of staff, has seen his popularity plummet following the release of the video of a white police officer killing an African-American teen, Laquan McDonald. This incident occurred in 2014. People accused Emanuel of ignoring police misconduct and they also accused him of “suppressing that video.”
Voters are also reminded that the Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, who is running against challenger Kim Foxx, took too long to charge that officer. Voters are also reminded of the timing for those charges. It was an odd coincidence that the officer was charged “only hours” before the video was made public.
According to The Huffington Post today, “People hate Rahm Emanuel so much it might cost Hillary Clinton Illinois.” People are not going to forget that she is linked to this mayor who has less than a stellar record with the voters. With those banners in the sky, it sure gives the voters something to think about making their way into the voting booths.
The group, Assata’a Daughters, is coordinating today’s banner actions, with Tess Raser heading the campaign. In the group’s press release they write: “To this day, Hillary Clinton has yet to condemn Chicago’s anti-black mayor. Mayor Emmanuel has conspired with State’s Attorney Alvarez during his own re-election campaign to cover up the police murder of Laquan McDonald —a life that to Emmanuel, Alvarez, and Clinton did not matter. Any politician who supports Emanuel should consider themselves implicated in his misconduct. Anti-black politicians are not welcome in Chicago whether they are running for State’s Attorney or President of The United States.”
Is linking Clinton to Emanuel working? It looks as though this could be the case as Clinton’s lead among African American voters in Illinois is “slimmer” than in Ohio or Florida. The only way to tell for sure if the high-flying reminders are working is by counting up the votes at the end of the day!
