Ashley Williams, a Black Lives Matter activist, infiltrated a Hillary Clinton fundraising event held Wednesday night in Charleston, South Carolina. The private residence social event – in which the youth activist claims she paid her $500 admission fee – turned into a bit of a back and forth banter session when Williams demanded – via a phrase written on a bed sheet – that the Democratic presidential candidate account for something she said two decades ago.
Writes the HuffPost on Feb. 24: “Williams said she and her colleague strategically placed themselves at the front of the crowd and waited until Clinton appeared. Speakers introducing Clinton around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night discussed Walter Scott, the Charleston A.M.E. Church shooting and how Clinton had a strong record of racial justice.”
The video shows Williams, one of the few African Americans in attendance, pushing her way through the crowd and unfurling her sign, which said: “We have to bring them to heel.”
The phrase came out of a statement that Hillary made in 1996 while in New Hampshire during her husband’s presidential re-election campaign. Speaking of youth gangs and a 1994 Bill Clinton crime bill advocating for harsher policing of gang members, Hillary used the phrase “super-predators.”
“We need to take these people on. They are often connected to big drug cartels. They are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘super-predators.’ No conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why then ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.” ~ Hillary Clinton, 1996.
“Can I talk and maybe you can listen to what I say?” Hillary asks after Williams rambles on, demanding that Clinton “apologize to black people for mass incarceration.” An aide for Hillary attempts to intervene, but Williams stands her ground, continuing to interrupt Clinton as a chorus of boos (and even hisses – who does that anymore?) dump down on her. “This is not appropriate,” Clinton says, before another staffer, later identified as a member of the Secret Service, removes the activist.
“I wanted to bring her to confront her own words,” Williams told The Huffington Post after the protest, adding, “We did this because we wanted to make sure that black people are paying attention to her record, and we want to know what Hillary we are getting.”
Per Williams, Hillary Clinton has a “pattern of throwing the Black community under the bus when it serves her politically. She called our boys ‘super-predators’ in 1996, then she race-baited when running against Obama in 2008, now she’s a lifelong civil rights activist. I just want to know which Hillary is running for President, the one from ’96, ’08, or the new Hillary?”
According to CNN, former President Bill Clinton “apologized last summer for the role his anti-crime measure played in disproportionately increasing incarceration rates among minorities.”
