High Point defeated Midland Park, 62-38, in the Second Annual Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament hosted by Westwood Regional High School. High Point will take on Ridgewood in the next round. Midland Park will take on Westwood.
High Point is a very strong basketball team. They know when to push the ball for fast breaks and when to pull it out and patiently run an offense. They are good at passing and can hit open teammates on back door cuts. They are also good at setting and using screens. They know when to dribble in and when to shoot from the outside. Madalyn Smith has a high basketball IQ and a quick release. She finished with 17 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds. High Point led at the end of the first quarter, 23-13.
Midland Park’s Thalia Ghalam has a great hook shot. She can post up and finish with either hand. She is good at creating space when she finishes. She works very hard for rebounds. She had 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 14 points. High Point’s Casey Langenbach and Emily Mulvoy were big forces inside. Langenbach can contest shots and box out. She had 5 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot, and 11 points. Mulvoy had 2 rebounds, 6 steals, 1 assist, and 10 points. High Point led at the half-time, 39-20.
Midland Park’s Chloe Kasbarian can use screens to get open for three-point shots. She has a nice headfake and cross-over to get past defenders. Veronica Pantale and Julie Carey are good defensive players. They can defend both guards and posts. They box out consistently. High Point’s Trisha Peterson is quick. She can get hard to the basket and lead fast breaks. She had 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 assists, and 14 points.
Towards the end of the third quarter Midland Park made a 9-0 run in under 2 minutes. Sofia Hansen is one of the strongest post players in Bergen County. She has nice jump shot with a high release. She can work the elbows and post up inside. She had 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocked shots, and 14 points. High Point led at the end of the third quarter, 55-31.
