Volunteers are furious that a sweet dog, Ulysses, was killed by the shelter in spite of rescue offers. Ulysses was one of the dogs from the San Bernardino shelter who were taken during a burglary. He wandered around looking for a home until he was found and caught by animal control. It appears that while he was on his own, he was attacked by another dog.
Volunteers claim that he was never seen by a vet for the bite wounds inside his mouth, and that when he returned to the shelter they refused to admit that it was the same dog who had been stolen. Finally, it was proved that Ulysses was the dog who was back at the shelter. According to the volunteers, once back, Ulysses was put in isolation. The volunteers say that on the day that a rescue was coming to pick him up, Ulysses nipped an untrained worker on the finger and so he was killed. Two rescues had offered to save him.
In spite of the nip, the shelter could have let Ulysses go with the rescue if they signed a waiver because of the bite. Why did they suddenly kill him? If in doubt about this dog’s personality, watch the video taken of Ulysses. He is heartbreakingly sweet and loving. He sits and goes down on command. He allows the volunteer to pick him up. This is NOT an aggressive dog. Here is more video of Ulysses meeting a senior poodle.
Here is what was written about Ulysses when he was alive and urgently in need of rescue:
I was stolen from the shelter and missing for 10 days! I was picked up as a stray. I had bite marks, scrapes, and minor injuries. Nobody really knows what all the trauma I had to go through but me. Now I’m back here in this KILL SHELTER and one of the MOST URGENT DOGS! After all I have been through I still really love people and I really want a home. I AM DOG FRIENDLY! I met and played with a senior poodle in the play yard the other day and I did great!”
Lois ‘Save Shelter Dogs’ Chisolm posted on her Facebook page a tribute to Ulysses: “Brave Ulysses. He endured so much. Do you remember when someone broke into City of San Bernardino Animal Control and some of the dogs escaped? Ulyses was one who was intentionally “freed” from his kennel, with nowhere to go. He wandered the streets looking for safety until he was once again caught by Animal Control and returned to the shelter. This is Ulysses interacting with a volunteer at the shelter. He knows commands and is so eager to please his human friends. Ulysses had no one to save him after so many weeks and he lost his life yesterday. So many great dogs are being overlooked. Do him the honor of watching his video and hold him in your heart briefly.“
Rest in peace, Ulysses. They tried to save you. They tried valiantly.
