If you’re like many people, you know when something is wrong or doesn’t meet with your ideals by the feeling it produces in your gut. Even when you go along with something, your stomach will remind you it isn’t your best decision. The stomach is referred to in ancient meditative medicine as the ‘hatha’ or center of your being. Everything starts and ends there. Digestion begins with the taste buds and saliva glands, but the bulk of breaking down food to distribute nourishment to our vital organs is the primary function of the digestive system. The stomach is your primary sentinel in protecting your vital organs from toxins that reek havoc on their functionality. It is also the gateway to your intestinal system.
The food choices we make affect the function of our digestive system. Stress, environmental pollution and food preservatives have an adverse effect on your digestion as well as added dyes, chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs and processed, sugar-laden foods. The greatest contributor to good or bad health are your food choices. High carb diets that consist of processed foods, refined sugar and high sodium eats away at the mucus lining that protects the stomach. The tipping point is when the stomach gets to the point of inflammation. This causes ‘leaky gut’ syndrome. Leaky Gut is when the digestive system is inflamed. The result is bloating, cramping, acid, irritable bowel symptons and many gasto issues. This syndrome, left untreated, accelerates to brain fog, lethargy, depression, and stresses the liver, heart and other organs.
Inflammation can causes diabetes, heart issues, high blood pressure and liver dysfunction because of the visceral fat asccumulation, as well as the body’s reaction is to become insulin and leptin resistant. There is an easy fix however. Depending upon the degree of symptoms, it may take time, but removing highly refined products, sugar, gluten and artificial sweeteners, chemicals and dyes is a start. The next step is to add healthy fats such as avocado, olive and coconut oils. Drink water, take probiotics (healthy bacteria) to assist in the healing if the stomach lining and aiding in digestion.
It’s unfortunate the Americans are taught the mindset of consuming whatever we want and treating the ramifications with pharmaceuticals. In many cases it is the prescription drugs that exasterbate the problem. Don’t get me wrong, modern science saves lives and there are necessary drugs that treat a specific unalterable condition, BUT the key here is necessary drugs that treat a specific unalterable condition!
Having heartburn from eating highly-processed, spicy foods, or gastro bloating from gluten and sugar-laden foods are NOT irreversible conditions. Taking antacids and reflux meds can actually increase problems and are known to deteroriate your bone density. It makes more sense to alter your diet or STOP eating the food that makes you sick! Pretty soon you’ll be feeling incredible!
