Music is perhaps one of the most under-appreciated aspects of a game these days, but in reality, it can be one of the most powerful ingredients. We’ve seen how an excellent soundtrack can bring to life a scene or character, and its music just has a way of embellishing that other parts of a game simply cannot replicate.
2K Games and Hangar 13 are working on the next iteration in the Mafia series, which will be set in New Orleans during the 1960’s. While there are quite a few themes Mafia 3 will explore, from a music side, it was a priority for the development team to have actual music from that time in the game.
Mafia 3 will be taking music from the 1960’s and other years and putting it into the game. Why this was decided in lieu of creating similar, yet generic versions of these songs was because of the team and studio director Haden Blackman’s commitment to maintaining the time period’s authenticity.
“I’d come back to that word again… ‘authentic’. Haden in particular is a huge fan of the music of that era and there were certain tracks that we really wanted to get in there. We put our list together of everything we wanted and we’re trying to get as much as we can. We’re also trying to unearth a few things that maybe have got lost in the mist of time from that period as well.
“And similarly, the ‘Pulp Fiction’ movie did it where they had this great soundtrack, but a lot of the music from it actually haven’t been heard in a long time. It wasn’t necessarily all the big stuff, it was of a certain period and they did a really good job of bringing those songs back to life. So we definitely want to find some of that stuff as well,” Mafia 3 Executive Producer Andy Wilson told Prankster101.
Mafia 3 will have a blend of authenticity and fiction, particularly when you take a look at how the city of New Orleans is laid out. Sure, it will have iconic areas like Bourbon Street, but Hangar 13 has taken some liberties with certain areas of the town to help make it more entertaining for gamers.
It currently isn’t clear when Mafia 3 will be releasing, as 2K Games has been mum on that since the game was revealed. All we know is Mafia 3 will debut sometime this year and on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Some have found info that suggests the game will launch in April, however, that seems unlikely given the fact that 2K isn’t making a big push with Mafia 3 news or anything like that.
