Sinda, a specially trained German shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix, worked for years to keep travelers passing through Florida’s Orlando International Airport (MCO), safe from harm. The seven-year-old dog is trained to detect explosives and she performed her duties until she was recently taken to a veterinarian who diagnosed her with cancer, reported Tuesday’s WFTV News.
Sinda’s handler, Paulo Maurtua, has officially adopted his long-time partner because she was forced to retire…now, Maurtua is doing his utmost to raise funds to cover the surgery needed to remove the cancerous mass that is in Sinda’s ear canal and jaw. Maurtau described the destructive nature of the cancer, “It’s eating up the inside of her jaw.”
Because Sinda was forced to retire, all of her veterinary expenses fall on Maurtua’s shoulders – a burden he is willing to take on. Maurtua stated, “She’ll get the surgery done, even if I have to break my bank account to do it.” In an effort to raise the funds for Sinda, a GoFundMe account has been established with a goal of $12,000 – already, over $7,000 has been raised.
On Tuesday, Maurtua expressed his gratitude for the funds donated thus far, “Wow, we just want to say THANK YOU! The support of people we’ve never even met is so forthcoming, and we are forever indebted to you, along with our friends and family, who have been here since day one, helping spread the word. Ricardo Garcia, you ROCK! We scheduled Sinda’s surgery today, and next Tuesday AVS will remove her ear canal in the hopes of getting a large part of the tumor out.”
