There’s a lot of folks who prefer to barbecue rather than use an oven. Providing the weather is accommodating, the smell of the food being cooked over the grill is just the “sizzle” added to the ability for just about anyone to ensure the food reaches the proper level of being cooked. That’s because it’s a hands-on experience where you can see the food as it transforms from raw to tasty. But all this requires being at the grill, which kind of ruins the fun of participating in a party or acting as a host who needs to travel amidst the guests. To solve this problem comes the Maverick ET-735 Bluetooth Barbecue Thermometer.
The ET-735 is small and runs on batteries so it is definitely portable. It has two connected probes, which means that it can take readings from two separate food items that each probe is pushed into (grill clips are provided to keep the probes from waving around). Should you wish to purchase an additional 2 probes, the Maverick will be able to read those at the same time also. It should also be pointed out that both the probes and the transmitter are water-resistant, so worries about flying hot juices is not warranted.
By “reading” what is meant is that a free iOS or Android app is provided and is being run on the phone/tablet and synced up with the ET-735. The process is the now-expected method that is the same as for a BT speaker being used to stream music from the phone, only in this case the data is going from the Maverick to the app.
The advent of Bluetooth — and most especially mobile devices like smartphones and tablets — has changed how a meat thermometer can function. Instead of having to sit right there, you can move around up to 160 feet away. Yes that is much, much longer than the 33 feet normal for Bluetooth music, but this is BBQ! And speaking of which, the ET-735’s app lets you select what to monitor: 1 meat and 1 BBQ or 2 & 2 (if you have the additional probes working). The app also adds timers and alerts to keep you abreast of temperature changes as well as providing a warning should you go past the signal range. Of course there are also presets for the proper temperatures for varied meats and other foods.
Maverick meanwhile understands that there are those who don’t want to be bothered by app use — for them there’s the Wireless BBQ & Meat Thermometer (a.k.a. ET-733 Wireless BBQ & Meat Thermometer). Functioning in a similar fashion to that of the ET-735, it provides its own receiver and has long 3 foot probe wires. Besides customizing the preset temperatures, it adds to those presets as well and has a 300 foot range.
With a choice of black or white, the Maverick ET-735 Bluetooth Barbecue Thermometer frees up the BBQ cook and provides for a greater freedom from the grill. It’s not designed to take the place of a watchful eye, but to supplement that eye through its $79.99 electronic brain.
