On Friday December 18, 2015 Reno rockers The Greg Golden Band hit the stage at Vinyl Lake Tahoe which is located inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe. Even with the snow coming down before the show started, the band still managed to pack the house. This was the band’s sixth appearance at Vinyl Lake Tahoe and it also had the biggest attendance of all the five previous shows.
The Greg Golden Band is a classic rock band composed of six members. They are all pros and have many years of experience, some even touring and playing shows all around the world.
Here’s the lineup starting with Greg Golden (lead guitar/vocals). Golden is the owner and founder of the world famous Bizarre Guitar and Guns located in Reno NV. The rest of the lineup features, Randy Scoles and Paul Holdgate (co-lead vocals) both former Ronnie Montrose frontman, Jeff Montgomery (guitar/vocals), Richard Wagner (bass) and Boris Tavcar (drums).
This show was not just another Greg Golden Band blow the roof off the place rockin’ kind of show that has become one of the band’s trademarks that keeps the fans coming back and the fan base growing with every performance.
No, this one was way better and more off the hook than most of the bands gigs that the fans have come to expect.
There are many good reasons this particular show did so well over the previous shows that Golden has done at Vinyl. It’s not that the other shows didn’t do well, as a matter of fact every show did very well. Why else would the Hard Rock keep asking them back? What happened here was the special guests that Golden added to the show’s lineup with more former Ronnie Montrose band members, Larry Hart (guest bassist) and Steve Brown (guest drums) along with Scoles and Holdgate, that makes four former Ronnie Montrose Band members playing on the same stage along with Golden and his band.
And if that’s not enough, then add in a brand new already set up by the pros at Bizarre Guitar Fender Stratocaster (signed by all members of the band after the show if the winner wants) that the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino donated for a free raffle during the show. Now if that doesn’t get you ready to rock, then I’m sorry to say, you’re already dead.
The band rocked the packed house for nearly three hours and the set went like this (from the set list handed to me by Golden himself),
“Long Way Home”, “Cherokee”, “Helter Skelter” (Beatles cover), “Smoke On The Water” (Deep Purple cover), “Maybe I’m a Leo” (Deep Purple cover), “Born On A Bayou” (Creedence Clearwater Revival cover), The next four songs are when all four former Ronnie Montrose band members, Scoles (vocals), Holdgate (vocals), Hart (bass) and Brown (drums) play on the same stage together, “Rock Candy” (Montrose cover), “Rock The Nation” (Montrose cover), “Good Rockin’ Tonight” (Elvis Presley cover), “Voyager” (Gamma cover), “Crossroads” (Eric Clapton cover), “Deep South”, “Back To Reno”, “All Along The Watch Tower”(Jimi Hendrix version cover), “Red House” (Jimi Hendrix cover), “Wishing Well” (Terence Trent D’Arby cover), “Man On The Silver Mountain” (Ronnie James Dio cover), “Day Of The Eagle” (Robin Trower cover), “Too Rolling Stoned” (Robin Trower cover), “Far Away”, Old School”, “Locomotive Breath” (Jethro Tull cover w/ StevenErich Schweizer on Flute), “Honkey Tonk Woman” (Rolling Stones cover), “Tush” (zz Top cover), “Waitin’ For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago” (ZZ Top cover), “Bad Winter” and “Fortunate Son”(Creedence Clearwater Revival cover).
At the end of the set just before the encore songs, the band raffled off the Fender Stratocaster, the lucky winner was Sue Volinkaty from Reno. She had the band sign the guitar after the show and got photos of her with the band as well (see slideshow). The guys also hung out after the show to meet and sign stuff for some new fans and mingle with the hard core fans that come to every show. If you ask this examiner, that’s how a band should all treat the fans, that is if they want a strong fan base like the Greg Golden Band does.
The next day, this examiner did an interview with Greg Golden on the status of the band since the first full length record “Greg Golden Band” came out. The record was produced by Tesla’s Frank Hannon and RedHawk Records.
Golden told this examiner, “Since the record came out the band has gained a lot of momentum in the U.S and even abroad, the record is getting plenty of airplay and one song was voted a top 20 new release by U.S. bands by Galaxia Radio in Europe for 2015. We’re very happy with the record and the way Frank Hannon and Redhawk Records did producing it”.
I then asked Golden, Is there going to be a new record for 2016?
Golden replied, “Yes there is, the band has been in the studio recording the next record with Hannon and Redhawk Records and expect a release date sometime in May of 2016. This time we have legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff playing on two songs along with the two former Ronnie Montrose vocalist we have on the first record, that being Randy Scoles and Paul Holdgate. Frank Hannon will again be playing the keyboards on this one as well. The new record will be better than the first one for sure”.
Since the band has been doing a run of shows at the New Hard Rock Hotel and Casino up at Lake Tahoe, I asked Golden, How do you like playing there at the Vinyl Lake Tahoe venue?
Golden answered, “We love playing there, it’s one of my favorite venues to play, the sound and lighting there is top notch and the crew that runs it are the best in the business, they really know what their doing and know the room better than anyone else. Everyone there, the management and all the staff there treats the band like gold, we could not be more pleased with the Hard Rock and the way they take care of us”.
Well that’s all I got for this one, the Greg Golden Band never disappoints their fans anytime they play. As for the next record from the band, I for one can’t wait to hear it, if it’s half as good as the first one was, then Reno will have another notch in their belt for producing another superstar rock band for the whole world to enjoy.
If you missed this all around awesome rock show, you’re in luck, you can catch the next Greg Golden Band gig on January 29, 2016 right here at the Vinyl Lake Tahoe inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe. See you there.
