Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world with billions of people all across the globe indulging it daily. In the latter half of 2015, a company called Grass Fed Coffee launched their single-serve, ready-to-drink butter coffee on the popular fundraising platform Kickstarter.
Butter Coffee is an increasingly popular and revolutionary beverage said to improve energy, motivation, and mood. Grass Fed Coffee’s mission is to deliver sustained energy, mental clarity, and a healthy metabolic state for weight loss. It is inspired by an ancient butter tea that is a traditional drink of the people in the Himalayan regions of India, Bhutan, and Tibet.
Butter coffee has recently gained a rapidly growing following of at-home brewers and on-the-go trendsetters in the United States and beyond. Grass Fed Coffee’s mission is to deliver sustained energy, mental clarity, and a healthy metabolic state for weight loss. Grass Fed Coffee uses this philosophy when choosing its ingredients; organic, fair trade coffee extract, medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, and sustainably-produced, grass fed butter high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fats.

Recently, John “Sonic” Ban, the founder of Grass Fed Coffee, spoke with the Examiner about his experiences working with the company and his hopes for its future:
Meagan Meehan (M.M.): How and when was Grass Fed started and why was that name chosen?
John Ban (J.B.): The idea for Grass Fed Coffee began over 2 years ago. My bio-hacker friends started making Bulletproof Coffee in the morning, from a butter coffee recipe popularized by Dave Asprey on his fantastic site, Bulletproofexec.com. After trying butter coffee first hand, I was blown away by the benefits. My cognition improved and my fat burning increased, while my energy levels remained steady all day, all from one incredible tasting cup. But it was difficult getting other non-biohacker friends and family to try it. They complained about the multi-step process required to make butter coffee; beginning with acquiring expensive ingredients in bulk, then brewing and blending, and the clean up after, all before going to work. I realized a void existed for a ready to drink butter coffee. The timing seemed right as well, as butter coffee lovers are everywhere today, from tech to Hollywood. But most importantly, I believed butter coffee’s benefits were simply too good to be limited to a select few. Grass Fed Coffee was created to make butter coffee accessible to everyone! We chose Grass Fed to be in our name because our butter is from grass fed cows in Germany. Grass fed butter is full of Vitamin K2, Omega 3’s, and CLA’s, which promote heart health, and are present in far higher amounts than butter from cows raised on industrial feed.
M.M.: Overall, how many products has Grass Fed produced? Has one product been especially popular?
J.B.: Our Ready to Drink Butter Coffee is our first product. It’s created quite a buzz in the beverage industry and amongst Butter Coffee drinkers and health enthusiasts. Butter Coffee is especially popular in the Cross-Fit, Paleo, and Yoga communities because of our beverages’ unique intersection between health and fitness. We hope Grass Fed Coffee is the first of many healthy beverages we bring to market.
M.M.: How do you come up with the ideas for your products?
J.B.: Our ideas stem from a desire for healthier, tastier, and more evolved products to benefit our lives. Energy drinks are often laden with chemicals and leave you feeling worse than when you started. To create Grass Fed Coffee, we combined the old and the new starting from ancient butter coffee and tea traditions from Ethiopia and Tibet, with premium ingredients, and modern technological processes.
M.M.: Thus far, what has been the most rewarding part of working with Grass Fed?
J.B.: Though we set out to create a Ready to Drink butter coffee, the end result exceeded our wildest expectations. The smoothness of the chicory combined with the slight sweetness of the xylitol made Grass Fed Coffee taste better than any butter coffee we brewed at home ourselves. That was probably the most fun. But it took us 14 months of pain to get there. We went through 17 iterations to finalize the ingredients in our formula. Each iteration had hundreds of adjustments, as we continually adjusted the amounts of ingredients to get the taste just right. It wasn’t easy. Our biggest challenge (or frustration) was keeping the butter from separating with the coffee without making everything too bitter. So when we finally cracked it, it was incredibly rewarding! We’ve also been blown away by the overwhelmingly positive responses from people who’ve tasted our samples. The excitement and anticipation from people around the world has also been incredibly exciting. Everyone on our team believes in and loves Grass Fed Coffee. We can’t wait to share this with everyone!
M.M.: Where do you hope Grass Fed will be ten years from now?
J.B.: Ten years from now, we hope Grass Fed Coffee will be a household name. And be one in a series of healthy, beneficial products helping people excel in every area of their lives.
M.M.: Do you have any exciting future projects in the works?
J.B.: We have big plans for additional flavors and mixtures of healthy Grass Fed beverages. Stay tuned!
