As the end of December nears, gift-buying stress increases. Did I find a present for everyone on my list? Did I forget anyone? Last minute shopping looms–but where to go and what to get?
For Portland, Maine readers, including manga readers, the following bookstores offer possibilities:
Books-A-Million, 430 Gorham Roadd, South Portland, ME 04106, 207-253-5587 (part of Maine Mall)
Books-A-Million is a hundred airport bookstores rolled into one; it may not offer many hand-to-find or unusual items; it does supply popular/bestseller type books within every genre. The South Portland store does boast a fairly impressive manga collection of popular titles.
Bullmoose, 151 Middle Street, Portland, Maine 04101, 207-780-6424 (near the now-closed Videoport)
With the addition of used books, Bullmoose has become a possible stop for readers! The South Portland location (219 Waterman Drive) and Scarborough (456 Payne Road) location boast the widest book selections; the Scarborough location has a respectable manga collection.
Nonesuch Books, 50 Market Street, South Portland, ME 04106, 207-799-2659 (Millcreek)
Nonesuch does not carry manga. It makes this list, however, for such an impressively eclectic selection. Like many bookstores, it sells novelty and stationary items as well as fiction, non-fiction, discount books, and magazines. Its books include used as well as new. One can find popular books, classics, and oddities. If you don’t know what to get someone, you will likely be able to find something at Nonesuch.
Other bookstores in the Greater Portland area (some with manga, some without) include the following:
Longfellow Books (no manga), One Monument Way, Portland, ME 04101, 207-772-4045
Stop in at Foley’s Bakery afterwards. Yum!
Casablanca Comics (limited manga selection), 151 Middle Street, Portland, ME 04101, 207-780-1676 (upstairs from the once beloved Portland institution, Videoport)
The Green Hand (as a center for folklore, it is hard to say what The Green Hand doesn’t have), 661 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04101, 207-253-6808
Check out the International Cryptozoology Museum afterwards! The museum also sell gifts.
So don’t fret! Maybe it’s too late to order from Amazon. Maybe you just don’t know what to buy. Bookstores offer up many possibilities to salve last-minute stress.
