The Grand Canyon is a popular place for outdoor enthusiasts to visit and is a must-visit for everyone at least once in their lifetime. The Grand Canyon is located in the northwest corner of Arizona, near the Utah and Nevada borders. There are many different ways you can get to the Grand Canyon and how to travel there all depends upon the experience you want to have while there. Here are some tips to help you navigate your way to this must-visit National Park:
If you plan to visit both the North and South Rims during your trip, keep in mind that both of these areas are separated by a four-hour drive. Though it may be only 10 miles across the canyon, it takes 220 miles to drive from one to the other. Also keep in mind the North Rim is only open during the summer months. This may have an impact on when you visit and what you get to experience.
With the South Rim being open all year long, this is the most popular and most visited part of the Grand Canyon. If you are visiting the South Rim you will be able to access it via an airport, rail service (Amtrak) or driving. This canyon rim is located approximately 90 minutes from Williams and Flagstaff, Arizona. There is a smaller airport in Flagstaff and limited service is available into the Grand Canyon Airport. Phoenix and Las Vegas are approximately a four-hour drive and is the closest major airport to the canyon. Greyhound and some local shuttle services, such as Arizona Shuttle, offers bus service to the Grand Canyon area from Flagstaff and Las Vegas.
The North Rim is a bit harder to get to and is only open seasonally from May 15 through October 15. This rim is located on the Utah side of the Grand Canyon just 30 miles south of Jacob Lake. Since there is no airport or rail service to this side of the canyon, it can only be accessed via car, RV, motorcycle or other vehicle. Renting an RV from Cruise America is a great way to experience the Grand Canyon and perfect for exploring the North Rim (and South Rim too).
There are several different ways you can enjoy the Grand Canyon, but the easiest way to get around is by car, motorcycle or RV. Traveling by road gives you access to all overlooks and trails. These are great ways to navigate through the area, but if you are not local you will need to fly in, take a bus or ride the rails to get to the area. Hopefully these tips help you determine the best way to get to and from the Grand Canyon during your next vacation.
