“Heroes Reborn” brought the super powered filled universe of “Heroes” back to the small screen on NBC for a limited time. Now “Heroes” has come to gaming consoles and PC’s as well with the newly released video game “Gemini: Heroes Reborn”. Released on January 19th for Xbox and PC, a PS4 version of the game will be available early February.
“Gemini: Heroes Reborn” is a first-person action adventure title from Imperative Entertainment and Phosphor Games. Play as protagonist Cassandra as she searches for information about her parents and tries to save her friend who has been taken captive. To do this she will have to discover and master her burgeoning superpowers.
While the story isn’t anything remarkable it does a good job of facilitating the gameplay, making players root for the protagonist and perfectly recreating the feel of an episode of “Heroes Reborn.” The game has an all-new original story set in the established “Heroes” universe. Fans of the show will enjoy references and easter eggs from their favorite episodes.
Gameplay involves a combination of puzzle solving, platforming and combat. Cassandra has the ability to jump to a different time period as well as slow down time, telekinetically move objects and catch and redirect bullets. Abilities must be used together to achieve objectives and leads to some fairly interesting gameplay.
Combat consists of creatively avoiding and incapacitating your enemies without a weapon. In some situations jumping to a different time will be enough to get players past a murderous guard. In others telekinesis is the best weapon as Cassandra lobs things into enemies or enemies into things. The most advanced technique is to stop projectiles as they come at you only to send them flying back at your foes.
Puzzle solving is a big part of “Gemini: Heroes Reborn”s level design. The end goal of most levels is to get to a certain point on the minimalist map. In one time period a passage might be blocked, in another it’s clear. So figuring out how to navigate through the level by jumping between time and moving things out of the way is key to success. It can be fun and rewarding to use superpowers to find your way through the level.
Platforming may be the most challenging part of the game. First person platforming can be a bit tricky with the best of games but it needs tight controls to work. Unfortunately “Gemini: Heroes Reborn” does not have the tightest of controls. If you enjoy challenging first person platforming then this game will be right up your alley. If not, then you may find it rather frustrating.
The graphics in “Gemini: Heroes Reborn” are mediocre but nothing to deter from the game. The voice acting and writing are well done. There are however, some performance issues.
Frame rate drops and other technical issues can leave the game feeling sluggish and glitchy. Throwing enemies around can get them stuck in the ceiling or walls which aside from being silly can actually prevent players from progressing through the level. Another frustration is when these glitches prevent players from using their special abilities. Sometimes a time jump or bullet block won’t happen when the command is given causing Cassandra to take damage.
Taking damage isn’t really a big concern though, because health regenerates very quickly. Aside from some of the platforming “Gemini: Heroes Reborn” isn’t a very challenging game at all. In fact players wanting more than a cake walk will need to play the game on hard mode.
With 16 short levels that take about 5 hours to play through this game isn’t very long. Priced to match at $14.99 the length isn’t much of an issue. Cassandra’s super powers are fun to use and combining them to creatively fight and solve puzzles is a strength of the game. Frustrating performance issues and a lack of difficulty are it’s weakest links.
Players may be surprised that “Gemini: Heroes Reborn” is a decent, fully-fledged game based on a television series. “Heroes” is seeing the end of it’s broadcast days but the world may live on through video games. If only we had Hiro Nakamura’s ability to visit the future and find out.
“Gemini: Heroes Reborn” is available on PC and Xbox One for $14.99. It will be available for Playstation 4 in early February.
