Video game channels abound on YouTube, and they tend to run in the same vein: witty commentary. The hosts give entertaining evaluations of the video games they play. Some of these channels are more dynamic than others.
Because the subject matter being discussed is video games, the YouTube channels available for this topic are male dominated. If you were to go on YouTube and type “women video games” into the search engine, the videos that would immediately pop up would feature women talking about feminism and misogynistic gaming culture. It’s easier to locate channels featuring young men talking about video games (with nothing to do with feminism).
Women and video games will have to be its own article, because feminism is a complex topic that can’t be covered briefly. Video games aren’t just for guys, but the sexual violence prevalent in many games does seem to be aimed towards women. Whether or not video games are promoting male subjugation or objectification of women is a topic too heavy for this list, but it’s still a topic that should be covered when discussing women and their relationship to their video games.
Without further ado, here is a look at some of the video game channels currently on YouTube (with no mention of misogyny).
