The Mohican Wildlife Weekend is a multi-venue, family-friendly event in the Loudonville-Ashland-Mansfield area offering visitors a chance to celebrate Spring, nature and Ohio’s native creatures on Friday, April 22, Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24. Most activities are free.
Offering dozens of fun and educational activities spotlighting wildlife habitats, heritage and natural history, the 15th annual Mohican Wildlife Weekend has something for all ages that is sure to please. Venues for the wide variety of activities this year are Mohican State Park and Resort, Malabar Farm State Park, Gorman Nature Center, Ohio Bird Sanctuary, Mohican Outdoor School, Pleasant Hill Lake Park, Lowe-Volk Nature Center, Charles Mills Lake Park and Wolf Creek Grist Mill.
This year’s theme is “Mohican’s Biodiversity” and several of the activities revolve around that theme. Keynote speaker for the event is Steve McKee (the former director of the Gorman Nature Center and the Richland County Park District for 35 years) will be giving “An Introduction to the Rich Biodiversity of Mohican” talk.
Weekend activities include fly fishing demonstrations (in Mohican State Park), photographing birds of prey, children’s crafts, hands-on animal exhibits, nature walks and hikes, a Bird of Prey show, various nature talks, archery, insect eating and nature-themed BINGO games. There will also be birding boat tours of the Clear Fork Reservoir (at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary). You will need to purchase a ticket ($10) for the birding boat tours. Also offered, pontoon boat tours at Pleasant Hill Lake where passengers will get the chance to see Ohio wildlife (possible Bald Eagles, osprey and waterfowl). Also at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary, visitors can learn about falcons.
Activities at Charles Mill Lake Park include Yoga on the Lake, Disc Golf, a Creatures and Canvas painting class, a wildflower walk and cast iron cooking demonstrations.
At Wolf Creek Grist Mill visitors can tour a 1831 operating grist mill and log cabins from the early 1800’s and get a glimpse of Ohio pioneer life. Also at Wolf Creek Grist Mill, be sure not to miss the special program being offered by the Columbus Zoo entitled “The Animals that Travel with Jack Hanna” where you can get up close and personal to a variety of birds, reptiles and mammals. And be sure to take part in a nature-oriented Scavenger Hunt.
Activities on Saturday, April 23 at Malabar Farm State Park include a 5K Walk/Waddle/Run, a vernal pool study, frog crafts and an evening barn dance being held from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. in the Farm’s main barn ($1 donation at the door for ages 12 and up).
