Frasinetti Winery in Old Town Florin California — really! Yes, on the southern edge of Sacramento County since 1897. Today, four generations have been making wine for more than 112 years; the oldest family-owned and operated wine producer in the Sacramento Valley. Now there’s reason to boast!
Once agricultural lands and a 400-acre vineyard, this Sacramento landmark is hidden (yes) by industry — long before the new wave of craft brews found their way — Frasinetti was swallowed by a commercial corridor along Old Florin Road. These fertile lands of Sacramento County included grapes and hops…back in the day.
While the vineyards vanished long ago, all the original winery buildings and Frasinetti family home remain. Traditional Italian wines are still blended and bottled on site. The tasting room greeting guests six days a week.
Brothers Howard and Gary made a leap of faith and in 1985 opened the restaurant in the historic winery building. Dining areas (quite) literally carved out of concrete fermentation vats. Monolithic redwood barrels stand as pillars. Comfort food never went out of style — Meatball Sandwich, Wedge Salad, homemade minestrone soup, Grandma’s Pot Roast, Scampi – millenials need to get hip to this action. Oh, the pineapple cake (not an upside down affair) is superb. A full bar and patio make this an ideal warm weather retreat.
Don’t look for the wine awards. The traditional Chianti and Burgundy are delightful and reasonably priced. Frasinetti Wines are available only at the winery — don’t miss the Signature Port! Truly a family affair, Howard Frasinetti is likely there welcoming you for lunch and dinner. Brother Gary, back of the house.
You’ll leave smiling. You’ll be back again. And finding it, well, that’s just part of the adventure. It’s all so totally unexpected!
