This weekend, Christ the Redeemer parishioners attending masses heard Fr. Patrick Cogan, SA, JCD announce that he would be stepping down as Pastor. Fr. Jaime Villalobos, the Parochial Vicar who ministered primarily to the Spanish community has also been reassigned. Fr. Frank Eldridge, SA was named as the new Pastoral Administrator. It was also announced that Fr. Robert Langone, SA would be arriving as a new Parochial Vicar. These appointments are effective February 3, 2016.
The news was surprising and unexpected for parishioners returning to Christ the Redeemer after last week’s blizzard that cancelled all weekend masses. Fr. Patrick served as pastor for about three years. His predecessor, Rev. C. Donald Howard, SA had been here considerably longer. Despite the relatively short tenure, Fr. Patrick brought about some necessary upgrades to the aging building as well as some investments in educational technology for various programs. Improvements in lighting in Atonement Hall, installing Wi-Fi in the building, support for the budding Nativity Play (in English) and additional youth ministry events all took root during his time here.
Fr. Frank Eldridge, SA served as pastor at St. Odilia’s Parish in Los Angeles. He is fluent in Spanish, which will be of great value for Christ the Redeemer’s large Spanish speaking population. Fr. Robert Langone, SA is coming from Chapel of Our Savior in Brockton, MA. Fr. Bob had been at Christ the Redeemer as an Associate Pastor from 1995-2000 when the new building project and dedication took place.
The Children’s Choir, which sang at the 10 AM Mass gifted Fr. Patrick with a flower arrangement before the Final Blessing. Parishioners gave Fr. Patrick standing ovations at each mass and many gathered afterwards to offer personal thanks and best wishes. Fr. Patrick said that his immediate plans were to take a 3 month sabbatical as he discerns what will be next for him.
