It’s easy to be discouraged by the direction, or lack of direction, of today’s youth. It seems that most kids are concerned about little more than the newest iPhone or gaming system. That’s why kids like fourteen-year-old animal advocate Karlie Smick of Columbia Station shine so brightly.
This is the eighth year that Karlie has brought Karlie’s Cause to the greater Cleveland area. It’s an event that she organizes each year to take place during her January 20 birthday to raise money and collect donations for a local animal rescue or shelter, in lieu of gifts for herself. This year, Karlie’s Cauase will benefit the unwanted, abused and neglected animals of Lorain County. All cash donations will go directly to the spay/neuter fund for the Lorain County Dog Kennel and Community Action to Save Strays.
Karlie is an 8th grade honor student at Columbia Middle School. This year’s fundraiser will include a friendly competition between Columbia Middle School (grades 5-8) and Copopa Grade School (grades k-4) to see who can collect the most pet food, cash donations, and other pet supplies. Last year, Karlie’s Cause collected more than one ton of pet supplies and more than $1,500 to help spay and neuter the dogs adopted from the Lorain County Dog Kennel!
Karlie will be meeting and greeting the public at Schild’s IGA, 34981 Royalton Rd. (82 & Island) Sunday Jan. 24th from 10-4. There is a bin available for donation drop offs at that store as well as other locations in the area. Donations will be collected through January 29th.
