Just as the flowers are in glorious bloom this Spring at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, a number of spectacular new attractions are also popping up all over the city. As you set your staycation calendar for the coming months, you may want to add a few of these five fantastic fascinations to your to do list…
Where: Stone Mountain Park
What to Expect: Stone Mountain Park invites guests to get in touch with their inner stunt professional with an attraction slated to open this Spring. As a new addition to its popular SkyHike® family adventure course, The JUMP is comprised of air bags into which climbers can safely free fall from a variety of heights – 5, 15 and even a whopping 20 feet for the bravest of hearts – from one of three different towers. Thrill-seekers who wish to test their mettle on The JUMP must be 44 inches or taller.
Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence
Where: Fernbank Museum of Natural History
What to Expect: For anyone who has fond memories of chasing fireflies on warm Summer nights, the newest exhibition at Fernbank Museum of Natural History is a must. Showcasing the spectacle and science of thousands of creatures that blink, glow, flash and flicker, Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence takes visitors on a well-lit journey through series of “re-created environments, from the familiar to the extreme, to explore the diversity of organisms that glow and how they do it; discover the variety of ways in which light is used to attract a mate, lure unsuspecting prey, or defend against a predator; and more.”
The Spectacular Screen on Big Beach
Where: LanierWorld at Lanier Islands
What to Expect: Evoking the spirit of the drive-in theaters of old, the new Spectacular Screen at Big Beach inside Lanier Islands’ beach, boardwalk and waterpark entertainment district promises to blow the concept of entertainment out of the water. Boasting 50′ x 80′ of high definition digital awesomeness, this state-of-the-art outdoor theater screen sits high on a hill above Big Beach – offering a regular rotation of cartoon shorts, music videos, full-length feature films and sporting events to LanierWorld visitors.
New Revolution Virtual Reality Coaster
Where: Six Flags Over Georgia
What to Expect: Well-known for its ability to deliver some serious thrills, Six Flags Over Georgia has partnered with Samsung Gear VR and Oculus to debut the first dedicated Virtual Reality Roller Coaster in the U.S. As part of Dare Devil Dive, riders who are 13 years old or older are invited to don wireless headsets as they are transformed into trained soldiers aboard a fighter aircraft in this highly immersive experience that features high-resolution imagery and 360-degree views synchronized to the action of the coaster.
Under the Boardwalk Sea Lion Exhibit
Where: SunTrust Pier 225 at Georgia Aquarium
What to Expect: Far more than an Atlanta attraction, the Georgia Aquarium is well-known for its conservation efforts. In response to California’s current unusual mortality event (UME), which has left more than 3,000 starving sea lions along California’s beaches, the Aquarium was proud to welcome two sea lion pups into its care in August 2015. Having acclimated to their new environment in a private area in the months since, the sea lions are now part of an exciting new exhibit at the Aquarium: Under the Boardwalk at SunTrust Pier 225. Featuring six rescued sea lions that were deemed unreleasable by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Under the Boardwalk show is designed to give guests the opportunity to see these adorable new Aquarium additions in an intimate setting, learn more about them and their natural habitat, and discover the dangers that they face in the wild.
