Jason Ferrill became the fourth bowler to win a weekly championship in the ongoing series of King of Gulf Gate scratch sweepers at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes, as he claimed the Week 8 title with a 219-127 decision over Kenneth Smith in the final match last Tuesday (Dec. 15).
In the title showdown, Smith, who had been top qualifier, never got untracked, while after a first-frame open, Ferrill strung four straight strikes and breezed to victory.
In the three-game scratch qualifying, Smith rolled games of 200, 245 and 248 for a 693 series, while Ferrill (627) and two-time champion Ronnie Hayes (599) were next in line.
After the cut to a three-player match-play game, Ferrill finished with eight consecutive strikes and a 228 score after a slow start, with two open frames and a pinfall of only 48 after the first four frames. Smith advanced to the finale with a 199, while Hayes was eliminated with 144.
John Thompson has won four of the sweepers to date, while Hayes has won two and Jesse Hawver and Ferrill one each. The King Of Gulf Gate series will continue over two of the next three Tuesdays, with the ninth and tenth regular sweepers set for Dec. 22 and Jan. 5, respectively.
Entry fee into each sweeper is $20, and sign-up and registration begin at 6:15 p.m., with practice starting at 6:50 p.m. Entrants roll three qualifying games on a modified house pattern, after which there is a 1-in-5 cut to head-to-head match play.
The series will have a Week 11 finale, and in order to qualify for the Week 11 showdown, a player must have rolled in at least six of the 10 previous events. From each entry fee, $2 is being set aside to be added to the Week 11 payoff. Brackets are available, and for more information, you may contact Gary Gooch at 921-4447.
