Clevelanders seeking a fun, family-friendly day trip where they can experience some outdoor activities (including sledding and skating) and indoor activities (putt-putt golf) should plan a jaunt to downtown Akron to Lock 3, the largest seasonal skating venue in Ohio. It is approximately a 45 minute drive from Cleveland.
Open until February 15, 2016, Lock 3 offers free open ice skating to all visitors. You can bring your own skates and if you don’t have your own skates, you can rent them for only $3. All skaters must sign a waiver and wear a wristband which is available at the registration counter. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult. No food or beverages are permitted on the ice. Skaters must skate in the same direction and it is recommended that all skaters wear hats or helmets and gloves while skating.
New this year is Zippy’s Little Roo Rink, a 28 foot by 48 foot rink that was designed specifically for beginner skaters ages 14 and under. Zippy’s Little Roo Rink is open the same hours as the main Ice Rink.
While at Lock 3, make sure you take advantage of their 150 foot sledding hill nicknamed “Reindeer Run,” an all season slide made of polymer (called Powderpack), an artificial turf originally designed for artificial ski slopes and toboggan runs. The sledding hill is designed for younger children but adults can feel free to join the ride as they accompany their children. Only toboggans and tubes provided by Lock 3 can be used on the hill. They may be rented for $3 for 30 minutes.
Hours for the sledding hill are 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. on Sundays. Special hours for MLK Day on Monday, January 18 are 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Hours for the putt putt are 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. And if you get hungry after playing putt putt or participating in any of the outdoor activities, Lock 3 has a concession stand where food and beverages like chili, soup, hot dishes and hot chocolate can be purchased.
