Debuting in 2009, MTV’s reality drama “Teen Mom OG” is a continuation of the storylines established in the original version of the series “16 and Pregnant,” which followed four young women whose lives had been irrevocably altered by an unexpected pregnancy.
Three of these girls – Amber Portwood, Maci Bookout, and Farrah Abraham – decided to keep their children, while the fourth, Catelynn Lowell, opted to put her daughter up for adoption. Via an open adoption, Catelynn has kept in touch with her daughter Carly and Carly’s family.
One of the surprising elements of Catelynn’s story is that she and Carly’s father, Tyler Baltierra, who jointly made the heartbreaking decision to give Carly up for adoption, are still together. Now they have another daughter together, Nova, and after ten years as a couple, are getting married on the show.
“The series is a cautionary tale about growing up fast and having to make very adult decisions at a young age,” explains Executive Producer Morgan J. Freeman. “And, it’s really been interesting to watch Tyler and Catelynn’s journey and everything that they’ve been through.”
Freeman is referring to the couple’s tough upbringing in which both dealt with their parents drug use. And, Baltierra’s father missed most of his childhood while he served time in prison for drug-related crimes.
“I don’t know how they’ve been able to create such a bubble, given how they grew up and their family situation, where they make such good decisions regarding their own lives,” says Freeman. “It’s hard to escape those bad influences when they’d been exposed to them for so long, so it’s really admirable that they’ve been able to carve out their own lives and are really moving forward in such a positive way.”
None of what they’ve been through has been easy, admits Freeman, but he insists that they’re to be held up as a model pair. “The thing is, yes, she got pregnant at a young age and they had to make some really tough choices, but they’ve have been a couple through all of it. They’re actually a great example of what it means to be in a real relationship – they discuss things, they support each other and they really work at being together and handling things, no matter how hard, as a team.”
Their wedding is an event that Freeman admits he’s been looking forward to for some time. “I’ve totally been a champion of Catelynn and Tyler since day one, so it’s really great to see them reach this milestone. They’ve been together for what feels like forever so this is a real celebration of everyone who’s followed them and fallen in love with them. It’s just so cool to see two people who really do love each other find happiness together. I guarantee it’s an awesome wedding – it’s been a long time coming and it’s as unique as the couple at the center of it all. If you’re a fan of the show, or just want to see two really happy and absolutely in love people tie the knot, tune in for this. It’s worth your time and it’ll make you feel good about life. What more can you ask for from a TV show?”
Catelynn and Tyler’s wedding will be featured on the January 25th episode of “Teen Mom,” airing at 10/9c on MTV.
