After spending the majority of her time in medical sales and marketing in Amsterdam, Ines van der Born decided to try her hand as a glove designer in 2004. Her admiration of fine leather design coupled with a passion for fashion inspired her to design her own luxurious gloves. From NYC fashion shows to the “Sex and the City” movie to international catwalks, Ines has enjoyed a level of success that continues to fuel her inspiration. She is now the proprietor of Ines Gloves and the slightly naughty leather wear featured at Dutch Leather Design. Examiner had a golden opportunity to chat with Ines about her designs.
Talk to me about your background and what piqued your interest in designing luxurious leather gloves and apparel.
My background is in international sales and marketing for several medical and pharmaceutical companies, I loved the elegance in fashion, especially the elegance of the 1950’s. I saw what gloves can do for men and women, but the glove shops were gone and I remained unable to find those glacé leather gloves that fit like a second skin and that were loved so very much. Two random thoughts suddenly came together: “I have to make myself a second skin!” and “I need an e-shop to sell these gloves!” In around 2004, with dozens of visions in mind, I brought several interests of mine to life by making my own array of luscious leather gloves, starting with “Where Are My Fingers Gloves.” It was a major hit and the Ines label was born.
Your designs are unique and exotic. Where does your inspiration come from?
Old magazines, pictures and just looking around. Sometimes I just don’t know and it simply happens.
When was your first major success and what was it?
My label was sold in the most expensive shop in Amsterdam. A total of 200 pairs were sold out within 2 weeks.
What makes your designs different from anyone else?
Elegant fingers and tight design. This is only possible by using the best gloves leathers available.
Your work has been featured on catwalks worldwide, as well as leading magazines. Which shows and features are you most proud of and why?
I am proud of the shows and features at MET gala, Couture Craft, Amsterdam Fashion Week as well as with Dutch visionaries.
Talk to me about quality leather and what it means to your designs.
If you want gloves to do what you want, it is absolutely necessary to use the finest, most expensive special gloves leather. People often think leather is leather, but it is not!
Since we first met in the fashion world over a decade ago, your design empire has radically expanded. Tell me more about how you made that happen.
I am proud to offer the highest level of customer support and be honest in all interactions. I also stay updated with digital development.
Who are your favorite designers and why?
There are so many designers but I do not have a favorite.
What advice do you have for other fashion designers who want to create their enterprise, just as you have?
Go for the niche. It is there. Understand and watch. Make choices and also learn to develop a commercial view.
Were your leather gloves really in “Sex and the City?”
Yes, it is true, they were in the first “Sex and the City” movie.
