National Video Games Examiner Patrick Hickey Jr. chats with Mark Warburton, Associate Producer at TT Games, who discusses the Midway Arcade Level Pack for “Lego Dimensions” and how it changes the series. Featuring “Defender,” “Spy Hunter,” “Rampage” and several other Midway arcade classics, this pack will not only bring back a ton of memories but will also provide hours of new gameplay for TT Games toys to life hit.
Patrick Hickey Jr.: What was the inspiration behind the Midway Arcade Level Pack?
Mark Warburton: For the last 11 years we have been committed to bringing some of the best movies and pop culture icons to a new generation of kids and young adults. We felt that it was about time we paid homage to the video game industry as well. Unlike movies which seem to get released over and over again as super 3D ultimate Blu-ray special editions, video games seem to just fade away. Consoles that we grew up with stopped working a long time ago and those that do still work command a high collectors premium. Good games never get old and with LEGO Dimensions, we can introduce a whole new generation to exactly what started us on the road we walk today.
Hickey Jr.: What was the development process like for it?
Warburton: Constant arguing over high scores, which I hold by the way. It was a really odd process because some of us hadn’t played these games for years, so to see them again and actually working on them was an amazing nostalgia trip.
Hickey Jr.: You guys had to play these games growing up, what was it like to see them come alive in LEGO Dimensions?
Warburton: It’s fantastic! LEGO Dimensions is a massive indulgence across the board for all of us. We got to play around with all these amazing brands and make the games that we would have wanted as kids.
Hickey Jr.: How can some of the level’s vehicles be rebuilt into other ones?
Warburton: That’s one of the great things about LEGO Dimensions. Those geniuses at The LEGO Group have helped create vehicles that can be built into three distinctly different vehicles. Every pack comes with one, and part of the fun is rebuilding them as you progress and seeing what new abilities they unlock.
Hickey Jr.: What’s your favorite Midway game? Why?
Warburton: Probably Rampage. I spent a lot of time on that when I was younger. I think there is something inherently fun about stomping around as a giant monster and destroying buildings. I’m not quite sure what that says about me, though.
Warburton: Smashing things never seem to get old and now you can do it in LEGO Dimensions as well.
Hickey Jr.: For someone who isn’t familiar with toys-to-life and sees all of the choices on the market now, why pick LEGO Dimensions?
Warburton: The thing about LEGO Dimensions is that we will certainly have at least entertainment property you will love. Every single one has been carefully picked and crafted to make them stand out in the game. So no matter what you are a fan of, this game will cater to your every whim. We also use real LEGO bricks that are, of course, fully compatible with your LEGO collection at home. So now when the game stops on the screen it can continue in your imagination.
