National Video Games Examiner Patrick Hickey Jr. chats with Josh Austin, Producer at D3 Go!, who discusses the addition of Eddie Brock’s Venom and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man in Marvel Puzzle Quest. Breaking down the characters’ uniqueness and the continued development of the franchise, Austin lets us know why the game, even two years after its initial release, is still one of the best puzzle games on mobile devices.
Hickey Jr.: The series, even after two years, continues to grow. How rewarding has it been to be a part of the franchise?
Josh Austin: It has been a remarkable two plus years for all of us to be working with the Marvel team and to be able to introduce so many of our favorite characters within the Marvel Universe. I am one of the newer members here at D3 but I’ve grown up reading Marvel comics and I have been playing Puzzle Quest since Challenge of the Warlords came out almost 10 years ago, it’s been very satisfying to be part of such a remarkable game.
I jumped right in around all of the Spider-Man related releases in the game, starting with Venom (Eddie Brock), Spider-Man (Miles Morales) and our newest character Spider-Man (Back in Black). So for me, right now has been such a great time to be a part of the team since Spider-Man has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters with his interesting story arc and possibilities.
Hickey Jr.: How will Miles Morales change the game?
Austin: Miles Morales brings a lot to the table and has much more offensive skillset than Peter Parker but retains a healthy amount of mixed abilities. Miles Morales is a Purple/Yellow/Red character in the game. His purple ability called “Hide and Seek” places an Invisibility Tile on the board to avoid damage but beware, as a second usage will remove the tile and deliver some strong damage. In addition, he also generates Web Tiles which powers his yellow ability and his friends abilities.
His yellow ability is called “Power and Responsibility” and Miles here uses his powers to create webs and save bystanders from incoming attacks, generating Web Tiles on the board. The ability brings a passive to the table as it generates AP for the team whenever Web Tiles are matched.
His red ability is called “ Venom Blast” and here he can stun an opponent at Level 1 but also allows player to pile on the damage.
Hickey Jr.: What makes Eddie Brock different from the other Venom in the game?
Austin: The main difference between Eddie Brock Venom and the Mac Gargan Venom is the addition of the “Lethal Protector” aspect. This gives Eddie Brock the abilities that helps protect against enemy attacks while still being able to dish out vicious attacks.
Eddie Brock is a Black/Yellow/Green character. His Passive black ability called “Give and Take” decreases the enemies protect tiles, his yellow ability called “Lethal Protector” deals damage to a targeted opponent but also creates decently powered enemy Protect Tiles in the process of his attack and finally his green ability called “Symbiotic Fury” not only deals damage but destroys random enemy special tiles across the board.
Hickey Jr.: Any plans on adding these characters to the PS4 game?
Austin: We have released two DLC packs so far on PS4 and have plans to release one more in the near future. Beyond that, we will have to wait and see what the plans will be for additional characters to the PS4 game.
Hickey Jr.: What character would you love to see in the game next?
Austin: I am really in a great place right now with my favorites but with the Marvel Universe available to us, there are many possibilities that can happen. I would love to see some of the fan-favorites shared by our forum-goers such as Nightcrawler, Black Bolt, Kitty Pryde, Mysterio, and more get into the game but I think we’ve done a great job adding fan favorites from the Marvel comics and films. We release a new character about every two weeks or so and I think players will see many more of their favorites come in due time.
Hickey Jr.: What’s next?
Austin: One of the great things about having the game available on mobile is that we are always able to fine tune and make changes as we go. I wouldn’t be fooling anyone if I said every update didn’t come back with anything that needed a fixing or two and I think that is what makes the game better as we are able to constantly look at ways to improve the game. Right now, we just released Champions Level and so far we have received some great feedback from players. As it’s new, we will get to see how player engagement is and find ways to improve the player experience. We of course will have new characters coming to the game in 2016 and hope to have more awesome tie-ins like we were able to do with Galactus Boss Battle, Ant-Man event, and the release of Thor: Goddess of Thunder and Amadeus Cho (Hulk).
