National Video Games writer Patrick Hickey Jr. chats with Josh Austin, producer at D3 Go!, who discusses the addition of Green Goblin in “Marvel Puzzle Quest.” Breaking down his powers and the developers hopes for the game moving forward, Austin lets us know just how important Goblin’s addition to the game is.
Patrick Hickey Jr.: What makes Green Goblin special?
Josh Austin: In Marvel Puzzle Quest, the strongest characters are 5-stars and we are excited that Green Goblin is now the first 5-star villain. He’s got a unique ability which is fortifying friendly special tiles and this basically means that any tile that the player has on the board are now more difficult to get rid of. This makes him an awesome support character for your roster.
Hickey Jr.: What are his powers?
Austin: Goblin Glider is his first power that costs 8 Black AP and sends his glider into his foes, dealing a ton of damage. However, the risk is while it’s in flight, the power is disabled and a countdown tile is placed on the board, that when it goes off, it will re-enable the power. If the opponent matches that tile it will disable this ability for the rest of the fight – so make sure and protect that tile.
Green Goblin’s second power costs 10 Purple AP and it’s called Trick or Treat. Green Goblin uses his favorite toys the Pumpkin Bombs, which the player can choose any color tile on the board. What’s great about this is that the chosen color will determine what the tiles do! Red will damage, Blue will stun, etc. All six colored tiles in the game will do something different so the player can really have fun first figuring out the surprise and second turning the tide of the battle based on what’s happening at that moment in the fight!
The next power that costs 9 Yellow AP is The Goblin King. This is the big one for Green Goblin and for the game as it brings the new fortify feature. The player can fortify friendly tiles on the board making them stronger, so the opponent has to match the special tile more than once to get rid of it. At max level for this power (all the way up to 5), you can literally fortify every tile on the board if it’s a friendly special tile, making Green Goblin a great teammate.
Hickey Jr.: How does he interact with other characters in the game?
Austin: Green Goblin works well with characters that have special tile abilities. The best thing would be to match him with a character that uses Red AP or something Green Goblin doesn’t use so you can release special tiles and have Green Goblin fortify them. For example, Jean’s psychic flames that deals damage and creates 2 strength tiles would be a nice character to pair up with.
Hickey Jr.: How do you want his appearance in the game to be remembered?
Austin: Green Goblin looks awesome, his art is great and very menacing. His Trick or Treat ability is fun for players to mess around with and being able to fortify special tiles all make him very memorable. Norman Osborn has been mainly all business in Marvel Puzzle Quest so it’s pretty cool to see him don the mask as Green Goblin and jump on his glider for a ride through the game.
Hickey Jr.: What’s Next?
Austin: I’m relatively a new Producer to Marvel Puzzle Quest but the entire team does an amazing job incorporating player feedback and current Marvel happenings to the game. Players can expect a nice selection of their favorite characters coming to the game, many in line with what they may be currently reading or watching. As I can’t share our next event or characters quite yet, players should be in for a treat in the coming weeks.
