April 7, 1933 marks an important day in American history. On this Friday afternoon 83 years ago, President Franklin Roosevelt took the important first step toward repealing prohibition when he signed the Cullen Harrison Act into law. This important measure re- legalized beer, allowing breweries to produce and sell beer as long as it remained below a threshold of 4 percent alcohol by volume. This day is now known as National Beer Day and it commemorates the end of the repressive era known as prohibition, complete with beer tastings and other celebrations across this great land of ours.
National Beer Day is dear to the hearts of beer lovers everywhere and Alamo Drafthouse is honoring this important day and the release of a new beer- friendly movie in style, with a new collaboration effort and movie promotion. The new beer is called Everybody Wants Some, a joint effort between Alamo Drafthouse and Austin Beerworks. The new beer is named after the movie of the same name, a comedy film directed by Austin resident Richard Linklater that centers on 1980’s college students and the life they live. The film has already received rave reviews and presently sports a 91 percent rating in Rotten Tomatoes, an 8 out of 10 rating in the Internet Movie Database, and equally impressive reviews among other critics and fans.
Alamo Drafthouse and Austin Beerworks collaborated on this new beer which they both agree is the perfect match for the movie. Everybody Wants Some is easy going and highly sessionable without being watery with a smoothness imparted by additions of wheat and oats and a floral/fruity nose and taste. The beer is available right now at both the Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park and Vintage Park locations. Served in 16 oz. cans, it’s the perfect accompaniment to this beer- friendly film that will have many who went to college in the 1980’s sipping with delight and nodding their heads in agreement.
Alamo Drafthouse in Vintage Park also has a new lunch and happy hour menu with some great deals. Lunch is served between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Happy Hour runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse Vintage Park has a very nice beer selection and many craft beers sell for just $3 during happy hour. What could be better than watching a movie and savoring a delicious craft beer at a more than fair price? Lunch hours also feature discounted beer prices on local favorites.
The new happy hour, Everybody Wants Some beer, and new lunch menu are available right now. The movie itself is slated for release on April 15 and will be showing at the Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park location. As an added bonus, any guest who purchases a sandwich, pizza, or salad from the new lunch menu at Vintage Park location will receive a complimentary movie ticket, good for a free movie viewing on a future visit.
“I think this would be a good time for a beer”, president Roosevelt exclaimed after signing the Cullen Harrison Act into law. I couldn’t agree with him more, and I am heading to Alamo Drafthouse, right now, to make good on my word.
