Field hunters will compete for more than $1,800 in cash prizes in the MHF Hunter Derby, part of the 2016 Midwest Horse Fair in April in Madison. Sponsors include the Wisconsin Hunter Jumper Association (WHJA). The event includes two judged divisions, based on fence heights. Both classes will have Classic and Handy Hunter Rounds, with the scores combining to determine the winners. Descending prizes accompany first through sixth place finishes, and ribbons will be awarded to eighth place in each division.
Applications are closed, and the riders have been announced for the 2016 MHF Hunter Derby. Thirty riders are slated to compete in the 2016 Midwest Horse Fair Hunter Derby. Five of these are from Illinois. The rest are Wisconsin equestrians.
The 2’3” to 2’6” participants include Connor Ballweb, of Lodi, Wisconsin; Kirk Boerst, of Seymour, Wisconsin; Allyson Butler, of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; Mikayla Clarke, of DeForest, Wisconsin; Makena Fincutter, of Lake in the Hills, Illinois; Gabby Gozdecki, of Palatine, Illinois; Natalie Kohl, of Neenah, Wisconsin; Taylor Mahoney, of Suamico, Wisconsin; Mark McKone, of Waukesha, Wisconsin; Flynn Nauta, of Monona, Wisconsin; Carley Piper, of New London, Wisconsin; Taylor Richter, of Arena, Wisconsin; Tricia Sales, of Lake in the Hills, Illinois; Cailyn Schave, of Poynette, Wisconsin; and Jessica Stoppa, of Lake in the Hills, Illinois. They will ride for prizes totaling $600 in cash.
The 37th Annual Midwest Horse Fair, themed “The Sky’s the Limit,” runs from Friday, April 15, through Sunday, April 17, 2016, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
Participants for the 2’6” to 2’9” division are Marisa Baese, of Thinesville, Wisconsin; Regan Betterman, of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; Andrea Bill, of Brooklyn, Wisconsin; Cayla Boerst, of Seymour, Wisconsin; LesLeigh Brandenberg, of Baraboo, Wisconsin; Melissa Derr, of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; Jessica Doering, of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; Makenna Gilhuber, of Cascade, Wisconsin; Kimberly Johnson, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Noelle Krueger, of Palatine, Illinois; MacKenzie McCulley, of Ripon, Wisconsin; Claire Patterson, of Stoughton, Wisconsin; Pamela Prince, of Deerfield, Wisconsin; Libby Sullivan, of Monona, Wisconsin; and Ella Zumbrick, of Fitchburg, Wisconsin. These riders will vie for $1,200 in cash prizes.
The MFH Hunter Derby is scheduled for Sunday, April 17, at the Midwest Horse Fair. Although this event is not sanctioned by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) or the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA), the competition will follow USHJA judging specifications.
Midwest Horse Fair highlights for 2016 include dozens of equine breed and discipline demonstrations, a long list of expert clinicians and skilled equine entertainers, horse-themed activities for children, a horse judging competition, Liberty Presentations, the Rodeo Drive Fashion Show, the Slot Youth Team Challenge, Stallion Avenue, two nights of professional rodeo, the World Championship Blacksmiths Competition, and lots of equine-related shopping attractions during the three-day equine expo.
