Some actors work hard on mastering their craft as well as themselves, and Emma Watson is one of them. Known for her role as Hermione Granger in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter films, Emma Watson has big plans and it doesn’t involve being in movies. The star is taking time off from being an actress to focus on her personal betterment, and on her “HeForShe” gender equality work with the United Nations.
In a recent interview with fellow Feminist Bell Hooks, Emma Watson revealed her future goals “I’m taking a year away from acting to focus on two things, really. My own personal development is one. I know that you read a book a day. My own personal task is to read a book a week, and also to read a book a month as part of my book club. I’m doing a huge amount of reading and study just on my own. I almost thought about going and doing a year of gender studies, then I realized that I was learning so much by being on the ground and just speaking with people and doing my reading. That I was learning so much on my own. I actually wanted to keep on the path that I’m on. I’m reading a lot this year, and I want to do a lot of listening….I want to listen to as many different women in the world as I can. That’s something that I’ve been doing on my own, through the UN, the HeForShe campaign, and my work generally.”
Having Emma Watson’s voice at the forefront for “HeForShe” mission to help create a gender equal world, will help bring awareness to this very important human rights issue!
“HeForShe” focuses on empowerment and sharing information on topics including education, health, identity, work, violence, and politics. When it comes to education, their priority countries include the United States, India, United Kingdom, Brazil and Turkey. Education is a top priority as it should be because as “HeForShe” states on their website “Education is not only a human right, it’s also the most effective way to grow economies, create healthy communities, and eliminate inequality.”
“HeForShe” works with global advocates, social media starters, and companies to start conversations & share information. A year ago “HeForShe” launched the IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative at Davos and continue building with a group of gender equality leaders from ten big companies committed to real change in house: Twitter, AccorHotels, Barclays, Koc Holding, McKinsey & Company, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Schneider Electric, Tupperware Brands, and Vodafone. Emma Watson also told Hooks “Our HeForShe IMPACT champions are ten CEOs who for the first time will be releasing to the media what their companies look like internally…companies and talking about how they are planning to address these issues as HeForShe IMPACT champions…We’ll be making all of these statements completely transparent, which is huge. It’s never been done before… We are organizing a HeForShe arts week, a university tour, and launching the HeForShe website. It’s a lot. There’s a lot to do.”
Activists, companies, teachers, musicians, politicians, athletes and more are coming together, and letting their voices be heard, to help make a difference for gender equality!
Being the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and the voice of “HeForShe” is Emma Watson’s biggest role yet!
