Crystal doesn’t know she was close to death when her “owner” abandoned her at the county shelter where ten dogs are killed daily (on average). She doesn’t know that some dogs live in homes where they get beds and are petted. All Crystal knows is that her skin feels a bit better because the shelter gave her medication for fleas, and now she is getting food and water regularly. For Crystal, that is heaven.
Crystal was dumped at the shelter in terrible condition. At only five years old, she was emaciated to the point of death with a flea infestation that must have affected her blood count. She was filthy and lethargic. Her intake picture is heartbreaking. She looks like a dog who has been beaten and cruelly used and who has given up. She does not look like a dog who has known even a tiny bit of love in her life.
The medical notes state: “Emaciated with a body score of 1.5/ 9. Approximately 7 – 8% dehydrated. With tacky oral mucous membranes and prolonged skin tent. The hair coat is diffusely dull, dirty, and soiled. There is a severe flea infestation with a large amount of live fleas and flea dirt noted. Fecal flotation reveals a hookworm and whipworm infestation. There is a wound near the base of the right ear which was clipped and cleaned.”
Volunteers are worried about Crystal. Dogs at Miami Dade Animal Services are often killed when they have medical needs like Crystal does. Crystal needs to be out of the county shelter and into a rescue where she will receive the medical care and the loving attention that she needs. After five years of cruelty, it’s past time for Crystal to know a bit of love in her life.
If you can help Crystal, please contact Urgent Dogs of Miami. They will help with local rescue, if possible. However, remember that instead of transporting Crystal long distances, there are many dogs all over the country in local shelters who also desperately need homes. In any case, please share Crystal’s story. Please network her picture in the hopes that someone will look into her big brown eyes and see that she is a dog who just needs a bit of love to blossom into a wonderful companion. Crystal is sure to be loyal and loving to the family who show her what it’s like to be cared for.
A dog who looks like Crystal’s sibling, named Shadow, was also dumped with Crystal. They look like twins. Shadow’s Facebook page is here.
