Easter is based on three important claims of Christianity: the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. Deists, people who believe in God based on reason and Nature and who reject unreasonable claims, greatly value Easter. Deists see Easter as a gift.
The reason Easter is a gift for Deists is because of all the obvious, but too often overlooked, holes in the Easter story. Pointing out these irrational flaws in the Easter story to sincere believers plants seeds of thought in their minds. Even if they don’t positively respond right away, the seed of thought is still in their minds. Eventually it will cause them to apply their innate gift from The Supreme Intelligence/God of reason to the claims and teachings of the Bible and Christianity. Christianity, nor any of the “revealed”/hearsay religions, can withstand the test of our innate God-given reason. (To me, this fact makes me believe God gave us reason to protect us from religion and from all bad ideas.) This will allow them to free themselves from the ungodly nonsense and fear-based superstitions of Christianity and to evolve into being a Deist.
A few of the enormous holes in the Easter story are:
The time Jesus was allegedly crucified; Mark 15:25 claims the crucifixion took place “at the third hour (9:00 AM), but John 19:14-16 claims it wasn’t until after “about the sixth hour ” (noon) when sentence was passed and the crucifixion took place after that. One of these claims COULD possibly be true, but it is IMPOSSIBLE for both to be true.
The story of the resurrection of Jesus; In the first place, it is common knowledge that once a body is dead, it stays dead. In spite of this reality, Christianity claims Jesus came back to life after he died on a cross. John 20:1 claims Mary Magdalene went to the tomb while it was still dark on a Sunday morning and saw that the stone sealing the entrance to the tomb had been removed. She then ran to tell the apostles. Matthew 28:1 contradicts John 20:1 in that it claims Mary Magdalene went to the tomb with another woman named Mary and it was not still dark but “as it began to dawn.” In this foolish story, there was allegedly a “great earthquake” that was cause by “the angel of the Lord” descending from heaven. The angel, as this story goes, rolled back the stone at the entrance of the tomb and sat down on it (he must have been tired as I guess flying to Earth from heaven is worse than any red-eye flight imaginable). The angel allegedly then gave the line that is famous throughout Christendom “he is risen” and then told the two Marys to go tell the apostles. Luke 24 claims there were two angels/angelic men at the tomb and verse 10 claims the women were “Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.” Mark 16 claims it was “Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome” who discovered the empty tomb and that instead of an angel or angelic type of man it was simply “a young man” who was in the otherwise empty tomb. He also told them “he is risen” and for them to tell the disciples. Verse 9 claims that after Jesus came back to life early on the first day of the week that he appeared to Mary Magdalene who then went to tell the apostles.
The story of Jesus’ ascension up into heaven: Amazingly this highly unusual act of a man flying up into heaven was not even mentioned in the gospels of Matthew and John. The two gospels that do mention it, Luke and Mark as well as Acts, all contradict each other. Luke and Mark claim Jesus flew back to heaven the same day he came back to life, while Acts 1:11 claims Jesus waited for 40 days before ascending into a cloud which allegedly took him to heaven.
Add to the above assaults against our innate God-given reason the Bible story at Matthew 27:50-53 which claims that at the moment Jesus died, the graves around Jerusalem opened up and the dead people in those graves came back to life. These zombies then hung out in or near their graves on a Friday afternoon until early Sunday morning at which time they went into Jerusalem “and appeared unto many.” (The alleged crucifixion, resurrection and ascension are all covered in set seven of our Deist Reality Cards.)
It’s impossible to value your gift from The Supreme Intelligence/God of reason while claiming to believe in this Biblical nonsense. As the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer pointed out, “a man cannot serve two masters, so it is either reason or the scriptures.” If we value The Supreme Intelligence/God and truth, we need to follow our reason. The more we can get the word out about Deism and educate people to this fact, the sooner we will replace fear-based superstitions with reason and Deism in our world. This, in and of itself, will eventually bring about an end to religious violence and division. What a much better world we will the have!
