The snowstorm bearing down on the East Coast is expected to offer extreme winter weather for the weekend. Weather reports have been flirting with a snowstorm prediction, but now it looks official, it is on the way!
According to NBC News on January 20, the weather reports are now saying a storm is coming and it could dump up to 2-feet of snow over the weekend. It looks as if this snowstorm is going to make up for the lack of snow in the region for the winter season so far.
The frigid temperatures and nasty wind have already moved into the area with the ice and snow promising a winter wallop that is slated to start Friday. This snowstorm is not picky with its aim, as it is expected to dump heavy snow “on every large Northeast city” and the surrounding towns.
The National Weather Service warns snow can accumulate 1 to 2-feet in the Northeast. Along with the storm, coastal flooding is also expected.
AccuWeather reports areas from Charleston, West Virginia, and Roanoke, Virginia, to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston could receive heavy snow from the storm. This storm is slated to impact more than 50 million people.
This winter weather event, which is expected to start Friday and go through Saturday, is a slow moving storm. According to the National Weather Service, Saturday is expected to see the worst of the storm, especially for New York City area.
Snow, ice, winds and cold temperatures are not the only thing this storm is offering, as thundersnow may come along with the rest of the mess, reports DB Techno. Thundersnow is when thunder and lightning appear during a snowstorm. While this isn’t a frequent occurrence, it does happen when the cold air is meeting warmer air in the winter, much like it does in the summer months.
Now is the time to check your supplies, get the shovel, snowblower and rock salt ready and make sure you are stocked on gasoline for your generator and snowblower. Now is the time to stock up on rock salt before the stores are all sold out.
Grocery stores will no doubt reflect the promise of this in-coming storm with bottled water and batteries being sold-out before the storm is due to hit on Friday. It is also time to get food into the house for a couple of days so you don’t have to go out in this major storm.
As of Wednesday morning, the timeline and expected path of the storm is explained by Accuweather:
“If the storm develops to its full potential and takes a track just off the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts, then a blizzard can unfold. The storm could shut down highways and perhaps cause airport closures.”
According to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, “This could be a long-duration snowfall that could last more than 24 hours in some locations.” He also conveys “this is also the type of storm that is likely to produce a very heavy rate of snow.”
From Friday to Saturday you may experience a winter wonderland if you stay home and watch it unfold. It can also be a winter mess, if you decide to travel this weekend!
