A senior dog, who had been suffering for an extended period of time, was set free from her failing body on Friday. The dog, named “Gracie,” had been brought to the Downey Animal Services facility in California to be put down by her owners, who believed that she was suffering from parasites.
The non-profit organization, Frosted Faces Foundation, had been approached by the family and the group recounted the shocking statement that Gracie’s owner made as they surrendered their ailing dog:
“This lady is from a rescue and wants to help Gracie.” I couldn’t even be angry. He didn’t even know… The really confusing part was that he then asked the ACO that if they went in and adopted another dog, whether he should bleach out his dog house so they couldn’t catch what Gracie had– We bit our tongues and rolled Gracie into the shelter vet office. The owners pulled away.
Frosted Faces Foundation intended to seek veterinary care for Gracie, but her condition was so dire that humane euthanasia was recommended by the shelter veterinary staff due to the extreme infection that had taken over her severely neglected body. The agency wrote, “The amount of suffering Gracie had endured was absolutely not to be prolonged and it was not in Gracie’s best interest to even be hopeful. We needed to accept that euthanasia was our gift to her and be satisfied that she did not pass alone.”
There is little in this sad situation to be grateful for – the ignorance of Gracie’s owners resulted in her being subjected to unfathomable pain and suffering for years. However, in light of her severe condition at the time that she was surrendered, the people who owned her will never be able to adopt another pet from the Los Angeles shelter system again – and the shelter intends to press charges against them.
