Dustin Diamond is off to prison to pay his debt to society after his barroom brawl on Christmas Day turned into a stabbing. The “Saved by the Bell” star thought he would be saved by a switchblade when he pulled it out of his pocket in an attempt to diffuse the fight.
According to DB Techno on January 17, Diamond and his fiancee, Amanda Schutz, were in a Port Washington bar when he got into a fight. His opponent suffered a non-life threatening wound from that knife that Diamond pulled out of his pocket.
Diamond was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. The 39-year-old stabbed the man with the switchblade during the altercation. Diamond’s fiancee was also found guilty of disorderly conduct in this incident at the Wisconsin bar.
According to ABC News, Diamond, who played the character of Screech on “Saved by the Bell,” was acquitted on a felony charge, but found guilty on the other two charges. He originally appealed this case, but he withdrew his appeal in December and showed up to start his four-month sentence at the prison.
At the trial back in June Diamond maintained that he pulled the switchblade out thinking it would get the guy to back off. He said he was just defending Amanda during the “single most terrifying experience of his life. He was sentenced to four months in prison and he checked in on January 15 to the Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, jail.
Along with his sentence in prison he and Amanda have been ordered to pay the victim restitution to the tune of $1,500. When Diamond was first sentenced, he filed an appeal. But in December he withdrew that appeal. The actor spoke at his sentencing conveying his regrets for this incident. Diamond said:
“I sincerely apologize to everyone involved. This was the single most terrifying experience of my life … This is all I’ve been able to think about for the last six months.”
“Let me express just how sorry I am that a night that centers around celebrating peace and love could turn into a night of immense regret for the rest of one’s life. Even though my intentions were solely to defend a loved one, they nevertheless were the cause of the single most terrifying experience of my entire life.”
“I want it to be clear that this situation will never be repeated again,” Diamond added. “I sincerely apologize to everyone, not just those directly involved, and ask for forgiveness for the way the night was handled.”
