Dumont High School defeated Paramus High School, 37-22, at the Frank Baldachino Holiday Challenge hosted by Dumont High School.
Paramus started two freshmen, shooting guard Patti Daniels and center Ore Agoro. Daniels is tall with a long wing-span. She knows when to cut, how to use screens, has strong hands, and can hit a nice jump shot. Agoro is extremely versatile. She has speed and jumping ability. She can post up in a variety of directions, create space, and can draw fouls. At the half-time Paramus led 12-10 and Agoro had 8 of the points and Daniels had 4. Daniels finished with 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 blocked shots. Agoro had 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, and 1 steal.
To start the second half Dumont put on a full-court press for which Paramus had no answer. Dumont did a great job trapping and stealing the ball. Due to their press they went on a 19-0 run to end the third quarter. Dumont not only knows how to score off fast break lay-ups, but they also know when to pull out and set up a half-court offense.
Dumont’s Sarah Skeith is a great shooter. She knows how to head fake and step to the side to get open for outside shots. She finished with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 blocked shot. Amber Porrett has been playing more from the wings and elbows. She is good at sweeping the ball and taking a strong step towards the basket. She is good at finishing and drawing fouls. She is also great at anticipating how and when to block a shot and then delivering a clean block. She had 7 rebounds, 7 blocked shots, 1 steal, 1 assist, and 9 points.
Agoro returned to the court for the fourth quarter and scored Paramus’ first basket of the second half. Paramus out-scored Dumont in the fourth quarter, 10-6, but it was not enough to earn the lead back. Paramus’ Alyssa Jacob works hard for rebounds. She had 10 rebounds as well as 2 points.
