A grisly discovery was waiting for two fishermen who discovered a yacht drifting aimlessly and looking as if there wasn’t a living soul on board. There wasn’t a living soul on board, but this ghost ship had a captain, a mummified captain.
According to Fox News on February 29, a German explorer’s remains in mummified form created an eerie scene to stumble upon in the middle of the ocean off the coast of the Philippines. The deceased captain was identified as 59-year-old Manfred Fritz Bajorat from Germany.
Bajorat’s mummified body was found seated and slumped over a table near the yacht’s radio. It was a disturbing discovery for the two fishermen who contacted the authorities.
Bajorat’s cause of death is unknown and the investigation is trying to piece together how long the mummified body rode the waves in this ghost ship before the fishermen discovered the yacht. As far as authorities can tell, it looks as if the last time anyone saw this German explorer was in 2009.
There were no signs of foul play aboard the ship and although Bajorat’s wallet wasn’t found, there was a lot of expensive equipment on the boat that went untouched. The two fishermen located the ghost ship with the mummified captain on Thursday about 62 miles off Barabo.
AOL News reports that the yacht was battered and the mast was broken. The mast had to break after his death, said a friend of the German explorer’s. He said that Bajorat was an experienced sailor, so the ship’s mast had to come down after he had died.
Items inside the yacht were scattered, but the GPS and radio, both expensive tech devices, were still in their place, reports Inspector Mark Navales. He said that it looked as if the German explorer was sleeping.
The medical examiner could only say that he had been dead for more than four days. The mummification process of Bajorat’s body was due to the salt air and climate, according to the authorities.
Dr Mark Benecke, a forensic criminologist in the German city of Cologne reports: “The way he is sitting seems to indicate that death was unexpected, perhaps from a heart attack.”
The authorities are trying to get in touch with his family members and hopefully they can piece together just how long this man was dead and drifting in the ocean on this yacht.
