A few years ago Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida made the decision to upgrade and revitalize Downtown Disney to give it a fresh face. While upgrading and remodeling Downtown Disney, it also got a new name. The new name is Disney Springs.
Disney springs is a shopping paradise with many new stores like Sanuk, Star Wars Galactic Outpost, the Art of Shaving, and Havaianas. Sanuk and Havaianas are two footwear brands that have huge booths at Surf Expo during the January and September surf lifestyle trade shows. It is always fun to see how these brands of footwear display in their shoes, sandals and thongs in their stores. Click HERE for an Examiner article about Sanuk footwear.
Disney Springs has not one but two Starbucks. Many of the mainstay restaurants that were at Downtown Disney are still showcased in Disney Springs. One of the more interesting places to eat is the new restaurant called the BOATHOUSE. The BOATHOUSE is a waterfront eatery with a beautiful dockside bar and “U” shaped mooring dock.
The BOATHOUSE is now open, offering live music, steaks, chops, seafood and a raw bar. You can also get guided tours aboard the Captain’s 40-foot Italian Water Taxi. See slide show. And if you are real adventurous how about a guided Amphicar ride that launches from the front of the BOATHOUSE, drives down a concrete ramp and enters Lake Buena Vista for a 20 minute tour around the lake. The Boat House was designed by Schlussler Creative. Schlussler Creative specializes in theatrical, hospitality venues, attractions and experiences. You might recognize some of their other Disney designs like the Rainforest Cafe, T-Rex and Yak & Yeti at the Walt Disney World Resort. Schlussler Creative has done work for Universal Studios with the Hot Dog Hall of Fame and the Galaxy Drive-In in St. Louis Park, MN. Another one of the great restaurants at Disney Springs is the Fulton’s Crab House. This restaurant is modeled after a steam-powered paddle-wheel river boat from the 1850s. Fulton’s Crab House serves crab, lobster, fin and shell, steaks, chops and chicken. They have a great lunch- time menu. You can order lobster corn dogs and the most amazing corn and crab soup. In fact the corn and crab soup is so good that all you need to do is order a bowl instead of a cup and you will be satisfied all afternoon long. It is really that good.
Another new restaurant to eat and drink is Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. This is a fun place where you can quench your thirst and eat some snacks while having a day of it at Disney Springs. The bar is a 1940s airplane hangar turned dive bar. It is the ex-home of Indiana Jones’ sidekick and pilot, Jock Lindsey.
One of the two parking garages is complete. And it is loaded with technology. Above each parking slot is a sensor that lights up green if the parking spot is open. On the entry point of each parking spot rows is a sign that shows the number of open parking spots in that row. The second parking garage is under construction and can be viewed from the Orange Garage as you enter the park on garage level two. Garage number two should be open when the Town Center opens during the summer of 2016.
Visit the slide show to see photos of Disney Springs and all the new stores and restaurants. Until next time be safe in the sun and have a great time in the great outdoors.
