Attempting to show Pope Francis the error of his ways might not a good idea, especially for Donald Trump who is vying for the nation’s top seat in government. Pope Francis has taken a hard stand on immigration, with his main concern being the people who are suffering as they seek safe haven across borders all over the world. This includes all borders, except of course the ones that surround the Vatican.
Donald Trump criticized the Pope as being a “very political person” during an interview on Fox Business Network interview. Trump said he doesn’t think that the Pope understands the magnitude of the problems coming from over the border in Mexico and how the flood of immigration has put the American people in danger.
According to The Washington Post on February 17, Pope Francis will visit the border town of Ciudad Juarez in Mexico, which is across the way from El Paso, Texas. This is is last stop on his 6-day tour in Mexico. The Pope is expected to use this location as an opportunity to call out to the U.S. to have compassion for the people crossing the border.
Trump said, “I don’t think he understands the danger of the open border we have with Mexico. And I think Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is, because they’re making a fortune and we’re losing,” Trump added. Apparently Pope Francis understands the concept of a closed border when it comes to the Vatican, which was built to keep out the dangerous people of the world.
Both men have the welfare of people in mind, with Trump basically taking care of “our own” and the Pope, as tradition dictates, has the welfare of all people in mind. The illegal immigration problem in the U.S. was the cornerstone of Trump’s campaign, as illegal immigrants committing crimes were overloading the headlines.
The Christian Post reports that the Vatican spokesperson, Reverend Federico Lombardi responded to Trump’s comments saying, “the pope always talks about migration problems all around the world.” He added, that “the duties we have to solve these problems in a humane manner, of hosting those who come from other countries in search of a life of dignity and peace.”
Trump isn’t saying no to immigrants, he just wants to see the immigration process happen in an orderly and safe way. He wants immigrants to come through with procedures in place, including vetting people and weeding out those who are dangerous from attempting to come into this country. Which is exactly what the Vatican does! The Pope surely has to understand the concept of safety. He is surrounded by guards and the Vatican isn’t welcoming immigrants to share in the elaborate estate that makes up this holy spot. So if you think about it, this is much like throwing stones while living in a glass house, or glass Vatican in this case!
Ashley Edwardson wrote an article last year as the Pope called out to the world to help the immigrants. She writes, “mm…the last time I checked — ten minutes ago — the Vatican was still surrounded by massive centuries-old walls, which were built by previous Popes to protect the inhabitants of the city. In fact, in 2014, the Vatican actually stepped up security after threats against the Pope.
As the Washington Times said in an archived article, “the Vatican…welcomes millions of visitors a year — but allows only a very select few, who meet strict criteria, to be admitted as residents or citizens.” Edwardson reported in her article that the Vatican allowed one immigrant family to take up residence in the Vatican last year. Only one family and that was after very careful vetting. So why is the Pope continuing to ask people to do something he won’t? Not to mention criticizing them for not wanting an open border for immigrants. No one is special in this world, that is what a host of Popes have preached through history.
Update: On the heels of his Mexico trip the Pope had more to say about any man who would build walls and not build bridges. He said that the man who would do this is not someone who is Christian! According to the New York Times Pope Francis suggests that Donald Trump is not Christian.
Folks are finding this judgmental comment so un-pope-like that it dropped some jaws today. Trump fired back very quickly saying that he finds it hard to believe that the Pope, a man who holds the highest religious place in the Catholic Church, could comment on another man’s religion. Trump, who usually talks off the cuff, actually read from a sheet of paper during this impromptu press conference.
The Pope is getting into politics, which is not a place for any religious figure! Many people found the Pope’s attitude a bit distasteful today while questioning Trump’s religion. Again, if helping immigrants is so meaningful to the Pope, open up the Vatican and bring some families in!
The statement the Pope made was found polarizing and confusing by some Catholics today, as one of the first things you learn about the man who holds this spot is they do not stand in judgement.
