It seems Donald Trump can’t go one day without spewing some venom at Megyn Kelly. The GOP frontrunner called Kelly, who served as a news pundit and political commentator on the Fox News Channel, a “sick” and “overrated” reporter, and this time Fox News defended the 45-year-old journalist, saying that Trump is “obsessed” with her and questioned the dignity of the candidate who hopes to be president.
On March 18, Trump tweeted out: “Everybody should boycott the @megynkelly show. Never worth watching. Always a hit on Trump! She is sick, & the most overrated person on TV.”
In response, Fox News said in a statement March 19: “Donald Trump’s vitriolic attacks against Megyn Kelly and his extreme, sick obsession with her is beneath the dignity of a presidential candidate who wants to occupy the highest office in the land.”
In previous childish insults, Trump has labeled Kelly a “loser” and a “bimbo.” He also disgustingly described Kelly as having “blood coming out of her eyes—blood coming out of her… whatever.” Trump later said he was referring to Kelly’s nose. Sure you were Donald.
The hostility between Kelly and Trump ramped up last August at the very first Republican presidential debate. At the time, the two had an antagonistic back-and-forth Twitter was after Kelly called the GOP hopeful out for referring to women as “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals.”
In January, Trump skipped out on a debate in Iowa after Fox refused to remove Kelly as one of the moderators. “They can’t toy with me like they toy with everybody else,” the billionaire told reporters at the time. “So let them have their debate. Let’s see how they do in the ratings.” Trump went on to finish second to Ted Cruz in the state’s caucuses.
Kelly spoke about becoming the story when it comes to Trump – instead of covering it. “It was bizarre because I became the story. He was so very focused on me that I became the story and, you know, you never want to be the story when you’re a news person,” she said to ABC News in early March. “You want to be covering the story so it was like an Alice-through-the-looking-glass experience.”
Fox continued its statement supporting Kelly:
“Megyn is an exemplary journalist and one of the leading anchors in America — we’re extremely proud of her phenomenal work and continue to fully support her throughout every day of Trump’s endless barrage of crude and sexist verbal assaults,” Fox said. “As the mother of three young children, with a successful law career and the second highest rated show in cable news, it’s especially deplorable for her to be repeatedly abused just for doing her job.”
