Saturday, Donald Trump, Republican candidate for President, easily disposed of the competition at the South Carolina primaries. Trump beat Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio by double digits who basically tied for second place. The win for Donald Trump was the final nail in the coffin of Governor Jeb Bush’s run for president. The Republican elite who said in June of 2015 that Donald Trump didn’t have a prayer or a chance at being the Republican nominee for President are now realizing that it is indeed possible and most like probable. People like Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina, just don’t get it. Graham has said of Donald Trump, “If you vote for Trump as a Republican, you’re buying a ticket on the Titanic.
The Republican Party has been turned upside down by the rise of the candidacy of Donald Trump. This was the party who spoke with reverence when addressing the presidency of President George Bush. Being a Republican meant not questioning that administration or the policies that came out of it. The Bush family was the cornerstone of the party. Then Donald Trump changed everything and there is no one to blame for his success more than the Republican Party themselves.
There were warning signs that the Republican elite refused to see. Americans were tired of war, were tired of so-called conservatism that eliminated those who had differing opinions and the elite refused to see the division in their own ranks. They were calling plays from a playbook whose time had come and gone. Voters saw the country changing but for some reason the party wasn’t changing with it. The primary in South Carolina proved exactly the point. The Bush legacy, not matter how popular or how much Carolina supported the Bush administration in the 2000’s, was just that a legacy. The voters did not want to return to failed policies or to an expired ideal that created the winning administration of Barack Obama.
Call him what you will, Donald Trump has hit on the pulse of America. Sure he is a salesman, but what he is selling is himself. Trump screamed for everyone to hear what voters were wanting for the past 8 years. Stop illegal immigration, secure our country, create a better America where there were jobs, and most of all, make America the country they wanted it to be. The Republican elite, all they had to sell was what they were being paid to sell. Lobbyists, PAC’s and Super PAC’s were controlling the everything from who would seek office to the platform the party would demand all Republicans to adhered to. Donald Trump said NO, loudly, to those tired rules and the people, thirsty for change, clamored to their new candidate of change.
Donald Trump’s win in South Carolina proves that the original system of elections really works, before the PAC’s, before the lobbyists and before money changed everything. It took an outrageous, loud and brash candidate who needed nothing from the party. The Republican Party needs Donald Trump but sadly for the party, Donald Trump doesn’t need the party. The Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said on Sunday, that if Donald Trump has enough delegates to win the nomination, that the RNC, “we’re going to support whoever that is.” They had better. It will be the only way they can possibly win the White House.
