The Republicans are at it again. This time it’s the junior Senator from Texas Ted Cruz, who falsely claims that, “The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.” This is the sort of thing that would have gotten him ran out of town years ago, but not in this Republican Party where it seems the more divisive, hateful, and dishonest you can be the better. There doesn’t seem to be a line this batch of Republican candidates won’t cross. We now live in a society where one half of our political establishment believes it is okay to brazenly lie and openly fan the fuel of hatred in order to make political gains. When did it become okay to throw facts out the window, to court openly racist groups, to rough up reporters and citizens that you disagree with? This isn’t the first group of politicians to stretch the truth and they surely won’t be the last.
The fact that Ted Cruz felt comfortable enough to claim such an outrageous thing is beside the point, or in fact that is exactly the point. There are no consequences for their action just reward. The Republican base doesn’t seem to care about facts, I’m not certain they even care about winning. Honestly, who really believes Donald Trump, Ben Carson or even Ted Cruz could be elected President of the United States. Raging against the machine is all the Republican base seems to care about, winning the White House seems secondary, if it weren’t they would be rallying around more palatable candidates. For the base, it’s not about winning, it’s about raging, against the Republican establishment, against President Obama, against America’s changing demographics, against the world. Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, and the others candidates speak to that rage.
In my opinion, this is the most dangerous batch of Republicans candidates this country has seen in modern times. You have Donald Trump refusing to back off his latest lie about the celebrating Muslims on September 11, then there’s Carly Fiorina refusing to back off her lie about seeing a Planned Parenthood video where the selling of baby parts was being discussed, then there is Ben Carson claiming that the Egyptian Pyramids are some sort of grain silo. These are serious times, and as a country we deserve and need serious candidates on both sides of the aisle.
Today there was another mass shooting and of course on the right all the candidates sent out statements expressing their condolences and prayers out to the families who lost loved ones today and I’m not knocking it, but the time for condolences and prayers need to be met with action. I’m sure condolences and prayers would mean a lot more if those who are in a position to act would do something other than block the efforts of those who want to do something to try to prevent this sort of thing from happening again.
