Hello New York Doll Collectors, and doll collectors around the country. We have been talking about Madame Alexander’s various 18 inch dolls. The artistry on these dolls have proven to be exceptional in reflecting and capturing the fashions of teens, Tweens and older. In this article, we are going to explore some new fashions, that Madame Alexander has entered into, and that is the style of steampunk.
Madame Alexander, released their steampunk version of the Wicked Witch of the West, from The Wizard of Oz. There is something very fashionable about this doll and there is also something very practical as well. It’s unusual, to say that with a collectible doll, that there is some practicality. But this only pertains to the fashion of the doll. And in keeping with the character that this doll portrays, practicality is necessary. I will explain as we take a closer look at this beautiful doll.
We will start out with the fabric of the doll. It is an olive color, sheer and sheen fabric that seems to have the ability to float. It creates a wonderful image of the fabric, blowing in the wind. Hence, adds to the mystique of this Wicked Witch. The sheer and sheen fabric, is made into a floating cape, as seen in the back of her dress. Also, that same fabric is gathered into folds around her hips and waist. Connected to the gathered folds, is a delicate, corset with black military style buttons on each side. There is the black material from the side to the back, and the olive green fabric in the front. At the neck of the corset, is a lined ruffles. The ruffles have a look of vines wrapping around her upper shoulders and neck; leaving bear skin at the base of the neck. Hmmm very risqué. But then, she is a witch. She can take all the risks she wants.
The skirt of our Wicked Witch, has a look of a thick gauze fabric. Perfect for flying on the broom. And this is the practical side of this Witch. With the gauze like material, we can believe that this fashionable witch, will not worry about wrinkling her skirt while flying many hours over the countryside. The skirt is simple and elegant, yet sturdy. And would continue to look fresh, so that her hours of flying on a broom, would not show as she makes appearances at a witch meeting or reception. Great image, yes? To top off the outfit, our wicked witch is wearing a pair of sturdy, lace up boots, a fashionable pointy black hat, worn over her long black tresses.
Now for the visuals of steampunk. Looking closely at her corset, there are a couple of cogs, of watch parts, placed onto the fabric. This is one of the many facets to steampunk artistry. Also there is a piece of machinery on her broom, also indicative of steampunk.
This doll is a gorgeous version of the Wicked Witch of The West. And what a great segue into the world of steampunk.
