In South Huntington, Long Island a woman faces multiple animal cruelty charges after allegedly abandoning her pets in her hot apartment on Beverly Road for days, reports News12LongIsland.
According to the Suffolk County Police, Melissa Buchanan, 27 left her miniature Australian shepherd, a Chihuahua two lizards, an albino boa and a cat in her apartment alone. Property owner, Nick Safar, who lives on the top floor of the home, told authorities he had not seen Buchanan for days and could hear the dogs barking. When he went downstairs and looked through the window, one of the dogs had died. “She basically cooked the dog,” stated Safar.
When police arrived they found the dead dog and the other animals. Animal Control Officer Michael Costa stated that none of the animals had received adequate care for a period of time. The apartment was filthy and deemed unfit for animals. During the time police and animal control were at the apartment, Buchanan returned home and admitted she had been away for days without having made arrangements for the care and feeding of her pets.
The cat and dog are currently in the care of the Huntington Animal Shelter and will remain there during the investigation. The reptiles have been taken to a shelter. Buchanan has been charged with six counts of animal cruelty. Bail was set at $2,000 cash or $4,000 bond. If found guilty of all charges, Buchanan could face up to six years in prison.
