Imagine a dog living life on a four foot chain in a yard where people rarely visit, with no shelter from the elements, and with almost no food or water. Day and night. No company, no companions, no love, a life filled with loneliness.
This dog lives in a backyard in Longview, North Carolina. According to a person familiar with this situation, this dog gets no attention, no affection, no protection from the weather, and often, no food or water. She gets no veterinary care. Yet her heartless owners will not relinquish her to those who want to make her life better. Even when offered money, they will not allow this dog — this ignored and neglected dog — to be saved.
According to the person who is trying to save her, this dog is emaciated, and she has sores on her legs from the chain. Her nails are overgrown. Yet she is sweet and extremely grateful for the bits of affection her would-be rescuer gives her when she visits to feed her or give her water. This person wrote on her Facebook post:
Normally her house is broken in half. I put it together last week and put her some bedding in to keep her warm. I’ve never seen her with food or water in her bowls. She has piles of feces about 12 inches from where she eats and sleeps. Pushed down the property behind the house with no human interaction. No bedding for the cold.”
This kindhearted person offered to give her owner money, just to save this dog. She posted on Facebook that if she got the dog, she needed a place for her to go. This rescuer’s house is already filled with dogs and cats. Someone stepped up to offer foster for the dog. This dog has a safe place to go! But the owners refuse to let her go.
Animal control has said that the living conditions are fine. From the photograph, it’s obvious that they are not. Driving by a few times a day would probably be sufficient to show that the dog goes without food and water much of the time.
Please contact the Longview Interim Town Administrator Mr. David Draughn at email@example.com, or call the Longview police who handle animal control in the city limits of Longview at (828) 327-2343. Please tell these gentlemen (politely, please!) that a dog living on a four foot chain without proper protection from the weather, without food or water, and without humane treatment (trimmed nails, bedding for the shelter) is — or should be — against the law. The address is: 66 20th Street NW in Longview, NC. Perhaps these authorities can either ask that this dog be treated in a humane manner or encourage the owners to give up the dog if the current owners decline to provide the minimum of basic needs for this animal.
