If you like your morning coffee, who wouldn’t like the coffee made from freshly ground coffee beans? Does your work place have a coffee machine which provides coffee from freshly ground coffee beans? If yes, do you enjoy this small pleasure? Or has this perk become like wallpaper in your mind and you don’t even pay attention to it?
Often when working with a client who is seeking a career change goal, they will have nothing good to say about their former workplace. The challenge question from me is for them to name three items in the workplace they found pleasure in. The small pleasures are okay. In fact, these are the ones we really need to go over and discuss. Rather than become steeped in minor annoyances which often set your mood and tone for the day ahead, why not spend the same effort on the small pleasures, the items which are pleasing and reset your mind toward the positive aspects of your workplace?
In survey after survey the reason given for staying in a company vs. leaving a company comes down to the work environment which means the culture and these small pleasures. Correct! This ranks higher up than compensation as the reason for leaving a position.
Take a few minutes and consider what are three items in your workplace you take pleasure in? Do you take notice of these each and every day?
How would you feel if these were not there one day? As in poof! Gone forever and no longer available? Often we take the small pleasures for granted and my suggestion is not to fall into this rut. How each of us go into the right state of mind to perform, which is the positive state of mind. How each of us remain in the right state of mind to perform highly in whatever we do will always be from the senses which trigger us into this mindset. Don’t you think being around small pleasures will assist us in this area?
Do you think this does not matter at all? Okay let’s move over to your away from work life? Are you able to name three items in your away from work life you take pleasure in?
Do you take notice of these each and every day? How would you feel if these were not there one day? As in poof! Gone forever and no longer available?
The bottom line is there is nothing wrong with intentionally appreciating the small pleasures. In fact, there is much to be gained by noticing them, appreciating them and allowing your mood shift to the positive to take place each and every day.
